Organisation
Mark out 2/3 of a full size pitch. Mark out an area where a target player can move up and down the width of the field. Starting point approx where indicated above.
• 8 attackers (Blue) 3-3-2 formation
• 6 defenders (Red) 3-2-1 formation
• 1 goalkeeper (Green)
• 1 target player (Grey)
Instructions:
In the example above the yellow attacking team combines with each other following the starting sequence to create combinations to create chances on goal. Switch the roles of attacking and defending after 10 minutes. The restart positions can be varied. The coach works with the attacking team to identify the key points of attacking using the various combinations that are available in the final and middle thirds of the field.
1. Mishit pass into A1 from a defender. A1 then passes into A2.
2. a) Pass into the midfielder’s feet (A3).
b) Pass into the forwards feet (A4).
c) Pass into the wingers feet (A5).
From this point the attacking team uses a series of possible combinations.
Scoring:
2 teams compete and attempt to score. The attacking team scores by scoring on the goal. The defending team scores by clearing the ball out to the coach (server). The defending team has only 7 touches to play the ball to A1. The touch restriction can be removed if necessary.
Key Coaching Points:
1. On A2 receiving the ball, the players in front (Midfielders and Forwards) should be making runs to create space to receive, open space to dribble, or create space for another teammate.
2. Support runs from players deeper (full backs, etc)
3. Checking runs should be made across defenders. Check away first from where you want to receive the ball.
4. Discuss the range of passing options available. Into the feet of checking front players, through balls to front players, 1-2 combinations with flank players or front players.
5. Eye contact and communication on passing so the timing of runs is correct and recognizing the moment to pass.
6. Use the attributes of the players to assess for potential combinations (i.e. aerial flicks, 1-2s, etc) High balls into tall strikers, low to fast quicker players.
7. Discuss combinations with wing players and potential overlaps.
8. Discuss combinations with midfielders breaking free in central areas.
9. Discuss combinations with the forwards.
10. Opportunities to switch play using combinations.
11. Patience to wait for good combination opportunities to pass into advanced positions.

Objective
1) Develop a teams attacking patterns.
2) Develop wide attacking play.
3) Develop central combination play.
Organisation
On a half size football field use a central possession grid of 35 x 25yrds between the 18yrd box and half way line.
Mark out two wide channels that adjoin the central area that are 15 x 25yrds.
(30-35 mins) 13 players. 8 vs 5 (+GK).
Instructions
2 teams compete. The blue (attacking team) attempts to score in the full size goal. The red team attempts to regain possession and dribble across the end line where the coach is positioned. The coach is always the starting point, and he /she passes to an attacking player in the 4vs3 zone. The diagrams below show potential solutions to breaking down the opponents back line. For the first 10 mins we can instruct the defenders to play passive (if needed) for players to get comfortable with the patterns.
Rules
• Players cannot leave their initial zone until the ball leaves the central grid.
• Offside applies behind the grids.
• Supporting outside backs may enter into the 1vs1 channels when instructed to by the coach.
Scoring
• Attacking team (blue) score in the full size goal).
• Defending team (red) score by dribbling over the half way line.
Progressions
• Add or remove defenders in the central possession grid (i.e. 4vs4 4vs2).
• Require a minimum of 3 passes before playing out to another grid or into tthe finishing area.
• 2 touch in the central possession grid.
• Add gates goals (2 or 3) on the half way line for the defenders to score in
