Outside of the Foot Pass
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization:
Players have a partner and a ball - line up opposite from each other.
Instructions:
Pass back and forth using outside of foot. Increase distance between players as they progress.
Coaching Points:
Pass off the front foot
Supporting foot is behind the ball
Side-on stance
Ankle locked with toe pointed down (punch through ball not flick)
Strike middle of the ball
Progressions:
Must alternate foot used to pass.
Drop cones for gates: players move around trying to pass through gates, most in 1 minute wins. Outside-foot passes count for double.
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization:
Players in pairs, one ball per pair. Setup like above - 5 steps between each cone, bigger if you want.
Instructions:
1) The player with the ball dribbles to the tall cone passes the ball and then sprints backwards to their cone. Repeat for 2 minutes. The passer will become the receiver and visa versa.
2) The player without the ball runs to the center cone to receive the pass, passes back in one touch then sprints backwards to their cone. Continue for 1 minute, then switch roles.
Coaching Points:
- Inside of the foot passing
- Strike the middle of the ball
- Non kicking foot aiming at the partner
- On your toes, no player should be on their heels
- When the receiving player is running backwards they should always be facing the ball and have their eyes on the ball
- Communicate with each other
- Make sure the passer has their head up so they know when the player is at the tall cone

Organization:
20x20 box with 3x3 box of cones in center. 4 players outside, 4 inside. 3 or 4 balls.
Instructions:
Outside players are targets. Inside players find a target player with a ball, check to ball and call to receive the pass. Player then looks for another available target player to pass to using the outside of the foot. After making the pass, player must check to central square before finding another target player to receive from.
Switch inside/outside players halfway through.
Coaching Points:
- Communicate
- Positive first touch to take ball towards intended target
Progressions:
- Race: most passes in one minute wins.
- Contest for inside players: successfully completed pass counts for 1 pt, 2pts if using outside of foot. Coach can act as active defender, if he intercepts pass or disposses player then minus 1 pt.
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization:
2 v 2 plus neutrals (around 4)
Instructions:
Neutrals can't move. All neutrals are available for either team, must pass back to field player from same team within 2 seconds, two-touch limit. Objective is to receive a pass over the end-zone line. 1 pt for successfully received pass, 2 pts if pass is with outside of foot.
Coaching Points:
- Pass and move quickly, use neutrals for a quick give-and-go behind your defender.
- You are effectively 6 v 2, so find open passes.
Progressions:
Free play (with goals) after 10 minutes.
