Key Factors
We now look to translate the movement/finishing drill we have worked on into a game scenario.
Organisation
The usual SSG set up; 9v9 on a 2/3 pitch.
Full width in the Blue defensive half and tapered in the Red defensive half.
Blues line up 1-4-2-2 whilst Reds are 1-2--2-3-1
No corner-kicks and offsides apply.
Coaching Points
- Width & depth; emphasise role of wingers to provide width and how striker brings depth by making runs into channels between CBs and FB & CB
- also by clever use of offside law. (You're only offside when you are "active")
- Remember, movement triggers the pass not the other way around; if the striker keeps making the runs, he will create openings.
- After coaching the striker specifically to create openings for himself, can we demonstrate how to create openings for others?

Drill (15 mins)
Key Factors
For this session, we're working on the basis that we play with one central striker.
Inevitably, most Striker-focussed sessions will concentrate on shooting & finishing; because that's what the striker is all about!
The following drill has been borrowed from Gary Curneen's Posiition-Specific Training book
Organisation
The practice area is set up as shown in half a pitch with two servers, one GK and two mannequins
The Striker (9) initiates the drill by running to the poles and touching each in sequence (A-B-C) before turning towards goal, receiving a pass from Server 1, beating the mannequin and shooting.
He then has 5 secs (depending on age/size of pitch) to run towards 2nd mannequin to receive a pass from Server 2
Coaching Points
The emphasis here is on movement but striker must
- keep sight of the ball
- anticipate the pass and time his run to enable quick control and shot
- Close control is required to "beat" the mannequin
- Player must then act quickly to be ready for second server.
