Topic: Winning the Ball in Transition
Coaching Goals: #1 Emphasize the importance of team and individual principles of defending (pressure, cover and balance). #2 To properly illustrate each players role when gaining possession back from their opponent
Team: 12-18 Players
Equipment: goals, bibs and balls
Age: High School Age 14-18 yr olds
Summary of the session: The session starts with a technical warm-up and then the main activity. After the players are asked to partcipate in 2 seperate 8v8 activies that focus on winning the ball back quickly after possession is lost. All players are active during the session and players are placed in seperate stations when needed to maximize opportunities.

Player Objectives:
WHITE team attacks RED
If RED wins the ball, they try to pass through the pressure to the middle neutral zone. If White wins the ball back from Red in the attacking zone, they try to penetrate and get a shot. If RED gets out of their defensive 1/3rd in possession, they reach the neutral zone and then can attack the team in BLACK.
White team has to run to the end line before coming back into now their new defensive 1/3rd ready to defend.
*Team attacking goal immediately after losing the ball
Coaching Points:
Shape in attack that allows the team gain possession quickly (High Pressure and then Low Pressure concepts).
Stay focued when the ball is lost
Condensing shape as a unit and getting compact
Team defending that denies the long ball service

Field: 45 yards wide and 50 yards long with neutral players on the flanks
Player Objectives:
*Teams play to score goals
* When gaining possession the teams must make one successful pass to one of their teammates before using the neutral players on the flanks
Coaching Points:
*Team should collapse on the ball to win the ball back quickly
*Deny the pass to neutral
*Keep defensive shape
*All players must understand their defensive role after the loss of the ball

* Use both length and width of the field
* Players needed to be mindful of offsides
Coaching points:
*Emphasize the coaching points that were mentioned throughout the session.

Player Objectives:
The White players maintain possession 3v3 but can play to their target players and exchange positions
Red players defend with primary defender on the ball and 2 other defenders in cover. Red attempts to win the ball and then maintain possession. Red plays to the outside "target player" to ease the pressure and exchange place with them after the pass. Target player enters either with the dribble or pass.
Coaching Points:
Emphasize maintaining possession
Organize after the loss of possession to get compact, primary and cover defensive strategies
Defensive effort and answer the question "How do we win the ball back?" together
In transition, Defensive unit drop to get marks and stay compact.
