4 v 2 Pressure Cover: 12 x 8 yards (20 min. max)
- 3 Rounds total
- Attackers have 2-touch mandatory and are trying to split defenders
- Defenders work for 1 minute then we rotate w/ up to 30 second break
Progressions:
- Make it a competition...
Splits = 3 pts
Pass down the line = 1 pt
- 1 or 2-touch
- If defenders can win possession in the grid, they get minus 1
Coaching Points:
- Communication is key: I go! and Force left! or Force right! are REQUIRED in order to build the habit
- Mental focus and work rate come first!!!
- Technique to close down: Take away line, close hard, athletic posture, low to the ground, short steps last 3 yards, body position to force ball to covering defender
- Technique to drop and cover: First step backwards to give depth, then cross step for speed, open body position
- Intelligence to drop and regroup: If you get beat once, limit the damage. No mental breaks!

Back 4 Defending: Narrow width x Half Field (45 min.)
- Back 4 defends the big goal
- Each attacking cone is numbered 1-4. Coach calls number to dictate which line starts the ball.
- unlimited touches
- Can add a striker and defending 6 to progress, then attacking 10 and defending 8 and 10... final numbers are 8 v 6
Defenders: Garvey/Louie, Selway, Eddie, Max... Ozzie, AP/Adam, Nick/Devin/Jayden
Progressions:
A) Defenders score a point if they win the ball and connect 7 passes
B) Attackers get 3 points for combo goals
C) Defenders score by connecting with 6 (neutral)
Objectives:
1) Recognize the space to defend (scan for space!) and make that line as small as possible
2) Execute closing down with proper body position and distance (touch tight as 1st defender, proper distance to make dangerous space small as 2nd/3rd defenders)
Coaching Points:
- Maintain your relationship with each other above all else! ***Stop it often to coach this***
- Distance between you should never change from 10-15yds.
- Recognize the most dangerous space (scan for space constantly!!!!)
- Close down to get real ball pressure (distance needs to be touch tight!!!!)
- Communication
- Pressure, cover, balance
- Work rate to defend well
- Look at each other to adjust shape as a unit.
- Scan the weak side
- Angle of approach: Tactically what's your role?
- Distance of spacing vertically and horizontally
- How do we deal with player dribbling laterally across zones?
- Attackers try to create numbers up with ball movement, combinations, and movement to create gaps in opponent's back 4

9v9 to Goal: (30 min.)
- Start with 2-touch, then 2-touch/1-touch, then unlimited
- Last 10 min. go 1-touch only, 2 on a turnover
Objectives:
1) Move and use the space properly.
2) Technical execution.
3) Recognize numerical advantages to decide when to possess and when to progress
Coaching Points:
- Scan and look for numerical advantages constantly! Awareness must be very high!
- Use the spaces! Where is space and how can you exploit it?
- Move properly to create space
- Timing of movement into space
- Open body position in possession, use front foot
- Defend with intensity to close down and apply real pressure on the ball
