Organisation: Set area for across the pond with 3 areas, middle area narrower than opposite ends, per diagram above. Approx 15 players.
Activity: Players are divided into 3 teams, with each team beginning in it's own area. Team in the middle begins as defenders. Ball is played into a team at either end, at which point the defending team will send 2 players to try to win ball. Attackers will pass ball around to their teammates, keeping possession and looking to make a pass across middle area to the other side. If defenders win ball or attacking team touches ball out of bounds, the 2 teams switch places.
Coaching Points:
Can players make technically sound passes with thought to weight, accuracy and timing?
Are players able to force defenders to step in to create passing options?
Are players able to make good decisions by playing passes short to set up longer passes?
Are players able to use extra attacker to spread defence and open up penetrating passing lanes?
Are players creating passing options by; getting wide, showing support, being mobile or getting long

Warm-up Game - Across the Pond (15 mins)
Organisation: Use width of 18 yard box and length of approx half pitch. Designate a retreat line using cones. 6-15 players.
Activity: Players play 3v3 (2+GK) or 3v2 using a goal line. 2 attackers begin near half, one with the ball, a 3rd attacker and 2 defenders begin behind retreat line. Play begins with an attacker playing pass to another, at that point play is live 3v2, with players able to cross retreat line to challenge or support ball. Attackers try to score on net (or cross goal line if no goalie). If defenders win ball on goal side of retreat line they can play pass to next defenders waiting in line, if they win ball on attackers side of retreat line they can try to score on goal.
