Short and long passing (15 mins)

Area 25x20 with cones in each corner and 2 x cones in the middle. Player on each cone and ensure more than 1 player on the cone where the ball starts.

Players pass the ball around the sequence and follow their pass. Passes 1 and 4 are long and passes 2, 3, 5 and 6 are short passes.


Change direction of the exercise.

Progression - introduce multiple balls.

Short/Long passing 2 (15 mins)

The movement of players following their passes requires awareness, communication and timing to be able to continually pass and receive around the sequence.

4 v. 2+2 (20 mins)

Use a 40x25 grid with a 10 yard zone in the middle. Divide players into three teams with four players per team. One team in each zone. The team in the middle is defending, two players are allowed to leave the zone to go pressure the team of 4 that has the ball. While the other 2 defending players try to intercept the pass across. Team on the outside is trying to connect a minimum of 3 passes before they play a pass along the ground to the other team of 4 on the opposite side of the grid. Once a team loses the ball, they become the defending team.


Coaching Points:

- Focus on recieving.

- Players must anticipate where ball is coming from.

- Footwork to get in line with the ball.

- Create angles to receive ball

- Have an idea of where you want to go with ball before you receive it

- Cushion to ground quickly allowing team to keep posession.

Quadrant Game (20 mins)

Use a 40*40 grid divided into 4 quadrants with groups passing and moving to cover all quadrants but players are not allowed to dribble into a new quadrant must pass to new quadrant. There are multiple groups playing at the same time and all players move around the entire field.


Coaching Points:

-Where should players off the ball go to allow to play out of pressure?

-Distance and angle of support

-Body positioning and open hips to have good vision

-Good spacial awareness
