Organisation
The full backs and wingers will come into play after 5-6 minutes
Key Factors
Screener
- Once the ball is played wide, the screener must position themselves to support the full back but also in a position to watch the lone midfielder and cut off any balls that maybe played into them or the striker. Key details to the screener is the position in relation to the 18 yard box.
Centre Backs
-If a striker drops short, Understanding when to go tight and when to communication to the screener to drop deep and adjust their position to stop any pass into the striker
Full backs
-If the ball is played out wide, can the full backs close the wingers? The full backs must close down quick enough that the winger doesn’t have time to square onto them and attack the full back.
-The full back must also close down quick enough that the whites’ don’t have time to cross the ball
Effecting the Unit
- If the ball is played into the middle, can the back 4 become narrow, making it difficult for the strikers to get onto the ball forcing the white team to play wide.
-If the full back presses the winger, how quickly can the rest of the back 4 get across to narrow the pitch, where would they position themselves i.e front post, penalty spot, back post.
-If the full back is beaten, how does that effect the centre back's position and where is the full backs recovery run?
What if's?
If the ball is Switched – can the back 4 get across quick enough and how they communicate this to other each, keeping a good line across the back 4 and allowing the other full back to close the ball down
Striker comes deep to receive the ball – screener protects the back 4 in a zonal situation (zone 14) be patient and be in front of the ball to stop any shot.
If the full back is beaten, how does that effect the centre back's position and where is the full backs recovery run?
Progression

GK, Centre Back & Screener (5 mins)
Organisation -
Blues (defending) - GK, Back 4 and 1 screener.
Whites (attacking) - 2 Strikers, 2 centre midfielders and 1 server
Cones outlining the area in which the white wingers will play in later on in the function.
The objective of the session is to coach the blue team and establish the key roles of the lone screener and the back 4 in the protecting the goal and not to allow the white to cross or allow a through ball to the blue strikers. The support and positioning of the 2 full backs and goalkeeper will also be made clear later on.
The ball starts with the white server just before the half way line. The ball will be played into the white midfielders to start.
Objective for the white team - to score as many goals as possible
Objective for the blue team - defend the goal
Effecting the players - key coaching points
Screener
- Once the ball is played into the midfielder, the screener can press the ball and not allow the midfielder to either turn on the ball allowing them to attack them 1v1 and get the screener onto the back foot.
- The screener must be side on to show the midfielder out wide and cut off the opposite centre midfielder.
Centre Backs
-Communication to the screener, constantly talking the screener. How they communicate to the screener, key words.
-Manage the gap between the screener and back 4 to limit the amount of space the opposition can work in.
Goalkeeper
-Communication to back four, pushing the back 4 out not allowing them to drop deep
-Positioning in relation to the ball - key details include positioning themselves on the edge of six, penalty spot.
Defending Team
If the Blue team wins the ball back they have 5 seconds to try and play a ball into the two goals that are either side of the feeder. This is introduced as a counter attack option to relieve the pressure.
