Pressing Warmup (10 mins)

  • 10 mins
  • 10 players (increase lanes based on STEP)
  • 1 ball between two
  • 10x44 area
Setup

Players make 3 passes; on the third pass, the player presses the Attacker on the line. Players switch roles after 3 attempts.

Technical Coaching Points

  • Defenders need to press as soon as they play the ball and move as quickly as possible to close down the distance.

  • When pressing, Defenders need to get in line with the ball and not ark their run. This prevents the ball from being played forward directly, forcing the Attacker to play around or over them.

  • Just before the player receives the ball, Defenders need to slow down preparing to defend. If the Defender doesn't do so, they are in danger of the Attacker playing behind them quickly.

Make it more challenging / Progression

  • The Attacker must try to get past the cones behind the Defender.
  • Defenders start from further away.

Pressing From the Front & Dealing with the press. (30 mins)

Equipment

Goals

Bibs

Balls

Goals or poles for defenders to "aim" or use a coach to receive the pass.

This practice works on pressing from the front (i.e., a goal kick to the opposing team when the "retreat" is in use, but also can be used to get the defensive players used to dealing with a high press.

Objective.

Red team (attacking team) must retreat to the "halfway line) to simulate a goal kick and then "press" the defending team to try and win the ball back.

Defending team must try and get the ball forward or combine with team mates to try and "beat the press" and pass the ball to the gates or goals or get a forward pass to the coach (at the halfway line)

Coaching points.

Attacking team should be encouraged to get back to the halfway line with urgency and then continue with the same urgency to try and win the ball back in the final 3rd to try and get a shot off.

Attacking team to "put the brakes on" before they reach the defenders, so they do not overshoot.

Attacking team to not all go for the ball, 1 person per player and those not nearest the ball to mark the space to try and intercept the ball.

Defending team to be encouraged to be "side on" so they can see both goals.

Progression

Attacking team must combine with team mates to get a shot off.

Match Practice To Emphasise Defending (20 mins)

2x goals

2x teams including goalkeepers or "sweepers"

Bibs

markers to separate the pitch areas if positional play information is needed to prevent "everyone" going for the ball.

Normal game but when one team scores, they need to try and keep possession while the other team need to try and pinch the ball and score so they can then be the team in possession.
