Objective - To improve our decision making in overloaded attacking scenarios

Method:

Game - 8 v 8 with overload grids (20 mins)

Game - 8 v 8 with overload grids

Duration - 20 minutes

Area Needed - Width of 18 yard box, length = half the pitch

Objective - To improve our decision making

Method:

  • 1-2-3-2 vs 1-2-3-2
  • Divide pitch into unit 3 grids - Defensive/Midfield/Attacking
  • Only player playing the pass into the next grid can join that grid in order to create an attacking overload

Orientation:

  • Key players in key grids - GKs and DEF, Midfielders, Attackers
  • Defending team's players must stay in their grids (don't track attacking passer creating overloads)

Coaching Points:

  • Use width and depth to create space for overloading player entering grid
  • Midfield unit rotate and make opposite runs to create space to receive
  • Use bounce passes to create overloads
  • Use overload to change point of attack when needed

Progressions:

  • Allow defending team to make delayed recovery runs to pressure attacking overloads

Cool Down - 10 minutes

Session Review - 4 minutes

  • Did we create and take enough goal scoring opportunities throughout the session?
  • Did we make the correct defensive decisions when faced with attacking overloads?
  • Did we create space to receive?
  • Did we transition quickly?
  • Did we vary our attacking runs to create options for penetrative passing?
