Description

3 players (Red) stand in an opposite corner to the 3 players in Blue. All players are numbered 1-3 as shown below.

Upon the coaches instruction (coach is in Yellow for demonstration) a number is called...IE Number 1. Both Red and Blue number 1's have to run (lines in red) to their cone in front of them, around it and onto the pitch. By the time both players get onto the pitch the coach will have thrown as ball into play (white line) and a simple 1v1 is created.

Players must look to run with the ball, dribble, shoot or defend in their respective 1v1 scenarios.

This practice works well if you have been working on shielding, shooting or the vast majority of other defensive/attacking practices and techniques.

SESSION FEEDBACK:

We have used this practice for a few years, adding outcomes and giving it a different name every year. By using this Session Planner, plus the progression/regression theory, has allowed us to plan it more efficiently.

There can be a little too much standing around for certain players of this age group (U10), so we introduced a rule where those not playing passed a ball amongst themselves.

A few notes we found useful:

Have them show their hands high in the air prior to the practice when you call their number...it's important they (and you!) all know what number they are.

Try your very best to match them evenly in ability... even if you have a "mirror session" ongoing with another coach, it is far easier to call a number over to your area to create overloads if required.

You DON'T have to wait for the play on the pitch to finish (goal scored, ball out of play) before the next numbers are called. Providing you have plenty of balls at hand you can call the number as soon as the previous numbers are on the pitch. Organised chaos.

Key Factors

Organisation

  • Minimum of 3 players in each team (Red and Blue).
  • Coach is in Yellow.
  • 2 x Mini goals.
  • Plenty of footballs.
  • 25yd by 25yd area for 6 players, increase if numbers increase.
  • 4 cones (2 Red, 2 Blue if at all possible).

Key Factors

Organisation

  • PROGRESSION: Coach (who has now changed position to oversee all aspects of the practice) can now call MORE than one number if he/she wishes.... IE: Red 1 and 2, Blue 1 and 2 , this will create a 2v2 situation..... calling all 3 number will create a 3v3 situation.

PROGRESSION: obstacles can be placed from the player's starting position to their cone, a ball can be added allowing the players the opportunity to practice dribbling with the ball before they enter the pitch for their 1v1, 2v2,3v3.... a goal (marked 4) can be placed to allow them the chance to shoot or finish also.

Key Factors

Organisation

  • PROGRESSION: Again, the coach has changed his/her position. Upon the coach's instructional number/s, an overload can be created (both attacking and defensive). In the example above, the coach has instructed Red 1, Blue 1 and 2... creating a Blue overload.
  • During this instance, the coach can play another progression (or, in favour of the 1 Red, a regression) by choosing where to throw the ball into play (TIP: our players love it when the coach has a ball at their feet and simply walks away, it allows them to think for themselves and attack the ball rather than wait for it to be thrown into play!).

Key Factors

Organisation

  • SMALL SIDED GAME: As you can see from the above image, the Mini goals have been swapped with Large goals.... a goal in the Mini goals counts as an extra point.
  • Goalkeepers can now be added if required.
