Skill Intro (15 mins)

Core Skill: 1st Touch.

Specific Aspect: In this session I aim to improve the quality of a player’s First Touch. When receiving the ball under pressure, moving away from a defender and into space.

Key Principal: Effective Possession.

Player Tasks:

-Position yourself so you can see the ball and your next target.

-Know what you will do before the ball arrives.

-Move the ball with your first touch away from a defender and into space.

-Try to face forward and pass forward.

-Support your team mate after you pass.

Organisation:

-3 Players per grid. Adjust numbers to suit.

-Ball at either end. 2 balls per grid.

-Grid sizes to suit age and ability.

-After each exercise, swap players roles. Approximately 3 minutes each.

Explanation/Progression:

-A ball with each player at either end.

-Player in the middle grid is looking to receive the ball and release early using a good first touch to maintain possession.

Combinations: Player to take 1st touch out of center grid and return pass.

Drop a ball at one end. Player in the middle now looks to receive turning within the area to play to opposite player. Keep your first touch within the area!

Add a ball to either end. Middle player now looks at taking first touch out and running with the ball to outer player. Outer player moves to middle and replicates with the opposite player as per diagram.

Change roles every 1 – 3 minutes.Encourage use of left/right foot, inside / outside.

Player actions:

-Know where you want to play next.

-Position yourself so you can see both players, (Passer and the Receiver). Forward facing positions!

-Check over your shoulder.

-Show the player where you want the ball and call for it.

-Keep the ball moving.

Progressions:

-Make middle area bigger/smaller.

-Lengthen/Shorten the whole area.

-Limit the touches.

-Have the passer act as defender placing pressure on receiver after making his/her pass.

Skill Training (15 mins)

Organisation:

-4 x cones, 8 x markers

-grid 30m x 30m with a smaller 7m x 7m centre grid in the middle.

-3 x bibs & 5-8 Red bibs.

Explanation: (Maximum 10 players)

-Ball starts in the middle with Blue players, 3 v 1. Blue players maintain possession inside the 7m x 7m area.

- #9 to get the ball as soon as possible in the centre grid. Once #9 wins the ball, they play the ball to Red players moving around the 30m x 30m grid. Game then becomes 7v3.

-Red now have possession and Blue players have to win the ball ASAP.

-To score a point Blue need 10 passes, Red need to maintain possession for a minimum number of passes to score a point. Add time limit for the blue player to win the ball back.

-Change the centre players regularly. (every 4 mins)

Step up/down:

-Increase/decrease the area size.

-Increase the players in the large area to allow success with possession.

Player Tasks:

-Move the ball with your first touch away from a defender and into space.

-Try to face forward and pass forward.

-Support your team mate after you pass.

-Players to pass and move to support team mate.

Coaches Cues:

-Quicker decisions, know your next pass before you recieve the ball.

-Minimum touches, keep the ball in motion.

-Find the biggest area with no defenders!

-Can you support a team with a minimum 2 options.

Hidden learning:

Dominate - As a group/team or as an individual. Defenders work as a unit to win the ball back.
