U6 Players usually are not psychologically ready for passing to their teammates and are still in the
mindset of parallel play – each is playing a separate game in their head. Still it is never too early to give
them a concept, as some will get it and it will begin to rub off on the others in their peer group.
Most U8’s who have played before are ready for the concept of passing to a team mate.
Please watch video below for an example and explination of a push pass.

Equipment
Two lines of cones or marking discs set about 5 to 8 yards apart with a player on each. Each pair has a ball.
Organization
Work on push pass - pass made with instep of foot. Your kicking foot should be almost sideways and plant foot should be pointed directly towards partner. Start with demo in slow-motion to they see it.
Key Coaching Points
- Proper form - might feel odd for young kids. Show and physically move foot so they can feel it. This works well if you can hold the ball still with your hands while each one comes up and kicks the ball like they are making a pass. Lets you see and correct the action easily
- Pass to partner making sure plant foot is aiming
- After pass step/ follow through and step on kicking foot.
- NO TOE BALLS!!

Equipment:
- Every player with a ball
- Pairs of cones (gates) set up 1 yard apart (1 step)
Organization:
- Players dribble around grid trying to dribble through as many gates as possible in 30 seconds, only rule is they can't go through the same gate twice in a row - every gate counts as a point.
- Pair up players (SHOWN) and now they must move around grid and make passes through the gates to score points.
- Play multiple rounds and evevn switch up pairs.
Key Coaching Points:
- Players are to be moving when passing and recieving if possible, if not allow them to work at their own pace and work on fundamentals.
- Encourage them to use the push pass (instep) but if all they kick with is their toes don't repremand them.

Equipment
- 2 teams - 5 per team on the field, no goalie
- 1 ball
Organization
- Keep the game moving and flowing as much as possible. Move subs in quickly anytime play is stopped.
- DON'T worry about bad throw-ins or restarts (or planting kids for restarts - LET THEM FIGURE IT OUT!!) at this level it is not a priority and creates to many rules for the kids.... just let them play.
Key Coaching Points
- Quality passes
- Open body (face teammate) to recieve pass
- Aim plant foot and hips towards teammate

Warm-Up - Blob Tag (15 mins)
Equipment:
- Half field
- Energetic coach
- Overly excited players with a ball for each
Organization:
- Coach is it, all the players have a ball in a grid.
- If the coach tags someone or their ball (usually get the best dribbler first to allow the weaker kids to get more touches), that players ball is knocked out of the grid and then the two link arms (without a ball) and try and get somebody else.
- Game continues until everyone is captured.
Key Coaching Points:
HAVE FUN and get the EXCITED to play!!
***Gather kids and start Blob Tag as they arrive. We to do a large group instruction after the warm up***
