Description

Objectives:

  • Being comfortable to take shots on goal with the long and short handle hit off the right and left foot.
  • Hitting high into the goal (Advance)
  • Knowing when to use the shot - areas of the circle.
  • Receptions - from different angles with a focus on the first touch for QUICK skill execution.  

Hits:

  • Grip - hands together.
  • Body position - low, balance (situational), footwork
  • Ball position and point of contact.
  • Confidence

Receptions

  • Grip
  • Body position & footwork
  • Stick angle - upright to receive bouncing and regular.
  • First touch - soft hands, set up for the next move- ball position, vision
  • Communication with the passer

Skill Review Hit (10 mins)

Option 1: 

Passing in pairs through the gate. 

 

 

Option 2: Hits (static or dynamic)

  • Player A makes a long-handle (Hit) pass to Player B and runs forward to receive a short handle hit from Player B
  • Player A receives and makes a short handle pass back to Player B and follows their pass. 
  • Player B starts the new cycle with a long-handle hit to player C

Skill Review - Static & Dynamic (10 mins)

Skil Review 1: Pushes, Slaps, lifted passes (static) 

  • 5 -10 yards apart
  • Passing in pairs using:
    • push
    • slap
    • lifted pass/flicks. 
  • Performed skills off the left and right foot.

Skill Review 2: Pushes, Slaps, lifted passes (dynamic)

  • Grid 10 -15 yards, 4 players.
  • P1 passes to P2, P2 --> P3 --> P4.
  • Move the ball outside the grid using push/slap/ lifted passes:
    • On the move (players carry before executing passes)
    • Right foot
    • Left foot
  • Change direction after a few rotations.

     

     

Coaching points:

  • Technique for each skill (see description)
  • Footwork, accurate passing, and proper receptions.

Session 2 & 3 (15 mins)

Set up: (honey pot)

  • 7 yards apart
  • balls on both sides 

 Instructions:

  • P1 makes a pass to P2 ,
  • P2 back to P1 receives across thier body and takes a shot.
  • P2 then makes a pass to P3,
  • P3 back to P2 receives on the back foot and takes a shot on goal.
  • Awards points for:
    • Hitting off the right foot
    • Using short and long handle hits

 Modifications:

  • Cones can start further apart to give players more time to receive. 
  • Have the passer join in to play the rebound.
  • Lifted passes.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage athletes to get a quick shot off at the top of the circle using both -
    • short of long handle
    •  left or right foot 
  • Pay attention to receptions
    • First touch - soft hands, set up for the next move
    • limited touches before taking the shot
    • ball placement and footwork

Session 3 & 4 (15 mins)

 

Instructions:

  • P1 hits to P2  and leads towards the circle for a pass back from P2
  • P1 receives, changes direction at the cones, good footwork to take a forehand shot
  • P1/P4 can choose left or right of the cones)
  • Continue alternating sides. 

Modifications:

  • 2 touches for players that have mastered the reception - one to control and one to take the shot.
  • P2 joins the drill by either running to the last post for a deflection OR taking the shot while P1 runs last post. 
  • Include cones for P1 to perform an elimination skill (limiting the number of touches to control the ball when entering the circle) before taking a shot on goal

 Coaching Points:   

  • The importance of the first touch - setting up for the next play
  • Body positioning/stance P2 and P3 -open, elbow away from body
  • Footwork approaching the circle and leading up to the shot
  • Ball position to take the shot

Session 3 & 4_2 (15 mins)

 

Instructions:

  • P1 takes a shot from the top of the circle and run to the left cone to receive a pass from P4
  • P4 hits to P1 as they round the cone. 
  • P1 uses footwork to receive and take a forehand hit before leading to the left cone to receive a pass from P3
  • P3  hits to P1 as they round the cone. 
  • P1 receives and takes a shot on goal. 
  • Repeat with P2 taking a shot on goal.   

Modifications:

  • 2 touches for players that have mastered the reception - one to control and one to take the shot.

Game Play 1 (EITHER/OR) (25 mins)

Instructions:

  • P1 receives a pass from P2 and passes into the circle for P3 or P4 before joining the play for a 3 vs 1 (plus the keeper) 
  • P3 and P4 lead or create space to receive and take a shot (at the top of the circle) or play until the ball goes out of bound.
  • Players are encouraged to play the rebound.
  • Points Awarded for:
    • Each shot taken at the top of the circle (2)
    • Players position in the key areas - last post, penalty spot (1)
    • Drop passes (from the baseline back to the top of the circle) (2)

 Modifications:

  • Alternate sides for the starting pass from P2.  
  • P1 performs an elimination skill before passing.
  • P2 can apply pressure to P1 after the pass is made.

 Coaching Points:  

  • Leading/movement in the circle to get free or create space. 
  • Positioning in the circle
  • First touch and vision - the importance of this to performing the next
  • Communication with the passes
  • Encourage players to take an early shot with supporting players in key areas of the circle to capitalize on any rebounds.

Instructions:

  • 3 vs 3 or 4 vs 4 qwith a goalie. 
  • Shot from anywhere 
  • Points Awarded for:
    • Each shot taken at the top of the circle (2)
    • Squeeze shot

     

 Modifications:

  • Alternate sides for the starting pass from P2.

Game Play 2 (EITHER/OR) (25 mins)

Instructions:

  •  Play 4 vs 2 (plus the keeper) until a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds.
  • P1 passes to P2 who leads forward from the cone (as an overlapping player).
  • P2 receives on the move and passes to P3, P4 (leading in the circle - baseline or to the top of the circle) or P1 joining the attack. 
  • Points Awarded for:  SAME AS GAME 1

 Modification 

  • Add 1 or multiple defenders (in orange) and apply pressure to the receptions.

Coaching points:

  • Same as Game Play 1
