Passing fluid (5 mins)

Focus: Receiving & Passing (encouraging movement

This simple exercise encourages movement post-passing, alertness / awareness of positioning and quick decision-making.

Set up:

  • Groups of 4/5 players seem to work best (although you can do with a minimum of 3)
  • No need to set up cones :)
  • One ball per group
To play
  • Pass and move!
  • Encourage first time passing and then move into space
  • Then progress quickly
Progressions
  • Overlaps (run outside [behind] of a player)
  • Underlaps (run inside [in front] of a player)
  • Now do both!
  • Call out the name of the person you are passing to
  • Weak foot only
Regressions
(only if you need to!)
  • Add extra players to the group (3 or 4 is optimum so work from there)
  • Add an extra touch

Think STEP

  • Space - do you need to make it larger or smaller
  • Task - can you adjust the task or challenge?
  • Equipment - can you add target areas/defensive players for example?
  • Players - can you increase/decrease the number of players?
4 Corner model

Psychological - communication, concentration, creativity, confidence

Playing out from the back - 'Beating the Press' (15 mins)

Focus: Playing out from the back

Set up

  • As shown, defence v attack
  • Start with significant overload 7v3 etc before progressing to 6v4, 5v5
  • Start with the ball with the goalkeeper, defending team try to play through the attack and players must ush up so one of them can receive the ball or run with the ball into the grey zone
Game
  • Attacking team (pink) can play however they want, and aim to score a goal as normal)
  • Defensive team (blue) must progress to the grey progressions (mix up as appropriate)
Progressions - defensive
  • Players must have 3 passes before progressing (then 4, 5, 6 etc)
  • All players must pass the ball before progressing
  • Combine the above with constraints i.e. 3 touch, 2 touch
Attacking team - progressions
Vary these according to what you are trying to achieve from an attacking perspective. e.g. goals count double if:
  • Score from distance
  • Build up play from the wings
  • 1-2 in the build-up
  • 1st-time finish

Coaching points - defensive team

  • Positional - where does everyone stand in certain situations?
  • Positive - "Play what you see" i.e don't turn into trouble
  • Speed - quick decisions and execution - 1 and 2 touch
  • 1on1 - Close down > slow down > sit down > showdown
  • Mentality - No shot or pass to create a shooting opportunity

Think STEP

  • Space - do you need to make it larger (easier) or smaller (more challenging)
  • Task - can you change the task or challenge?
  • Equipment - can you add target areas for example?
  • Players - can you increase/decrease the number of players?
