Ball Mastery

Aim: Improve player’s ability to manipulate the movement of a ball.

Drill: Each player has a ball inside the square. Player’s begin by dribbling around the grid using different parts of both of their feet. The coach can change to the conditions e.g. only right foot, or only inside of foot.

Coaches focus on using techniques using the soles of the foot.

Key Points: Focus on correct technique before speed. Work on getting the movements correct at walking speed before increasing to a jog.

Encourage players to get as many touches on the ball as they can.

The aim of this activity is to make players comfortable on the ball so that they feel confident in any situation.

Numbers Cross

Aim: To develop players technique and skill whilst running with the ball without pressure.

Drill: Players are split into four team with each team being given a number 1-4. When the players team number is called out the run with the ball across the grid, turn and run back. More than one number can be called to make it more congested in the middle which encourages players to keep closer control. If players comfortable then exercise will be turned into a competition.

Key Points: Push the ball out in front, work on getting the control.

Players should have their head up to avoid any collisions.

Running with the Ball

Aim: Develop player’s ability to run with the ball without pressure.

Drill: Players are split into two teams, with teams lining up at opposite corners. The first player of each line runs with the ball towards the goal at the far end. Once in the shooting zone the player can take a shot.

Key Focus: Ensure players are using the correct technique (pushing the ball with the laces).

Players are under no pressure so the focus remains on the technique.

Running with the Ball

Aim: Develop player’s ability to run with the ball with the pressure of a defender.

Drill: Players are split into two teams, with teams lining up at opposite corners. The first player of one line runs with the ball towards the goal at the far end. Once in the shooting zone the player can take a shot. As soon as they shoot, the next player in the opposite line takes off with the ball towards the goal. The player that just shot becomes the defender and tries to close down the player.

Key Focus: Ensure players are using the correct technique (pushing the ball with the laces).

Players are put under a bit of pressure to help them develop both technique and confidence.
