Description

These games are focusing on the use of zonal defence. It's important for the defending team to communicate well to ensure the hotline and any easy pass options forward are nullified.

Key Points to look for:

- Defensive body position (stick down, able to move)

- Communication

- Defending narrow and not too spread out

Zonal 3v3v3

Set Up:

3 team of 3 or 4 depending on numbers you have at training.

2 teams on the outside (orange and blue), and 1 team in middle (green)

Rules:

Orange and Blue team try to pass to each other.

Green trying to win the ball from either a tackle or intercept.

Team defending in the middle can go anywhere, but the teams on the outside can't cross the half way line.

If the team in middle turn the ball over, the team that lost possession goes to the middle.

Key Points:

Early passing and movement off the ball

Communication in defence

Zonal Bench Ball 5v5

Set up:

- 2 teams of 5.

- 4 players from one team in their own half, and the final player on the end line opposite.

Rules:

Like bench ball, each team tries to pass to their player on the end zone with the opposition trying to intercept.

Once the player in the end zone receives the ball, they dribble back to their zone, and the player that made the pass replaces them in the end zone.

Variations:

- Increase/Decrease numbers to suit your squad

- No overhead

- 2 players in the end zone

- One player is allowed in the opposition half as a 'pivot' player

Make competitive by putting a point system in place and a 'forfeit' for the losing team after a certain length of time.

Give plenty of time to discuss what's going well and what needs to be improved upon.
