20-10-20, 15 yards wide. 3 teams of 5. One team defends and two teams keep possession in a box and must complete 5 passes before switching the ball to the team waiting to receive in the opposite box. The team that reacts quickly and supports the switch now keeps possession with the receiving team. The last team in now defends and the team that defended last in the top box now rests and waits for the next switch.
Start with no passing requirement.
Key points:
Where are the spaces we can exploit?
Ability to recognize space on the other side of the field.
Quick ball movement.
Awareness through good vision/decision making to switch play to expose opposition weakness.
If it’s tight down one side can we recognize the space is out on the other side and switch the ball?
Be comfortable on the ball.
One touch play.
Quick & Clever play.
Pre-empt where the ball is going.
Know your next pass.
Capacity to anticipate and read the game.
Awareness of players runs to be able to spot when a player wants the ball and when he is trying to create space for someone else.
Created the space can you now exploit it with the quality and timing of passing and your movement?
Decision making. When to pass to a running player and when to dribble to exploit the space. Ability to change decision quickly.
Don't force play - Be patient, keep possession.
Recognise - When to play positive and when to turn it down and recycle and start again – If we cant play forward – retain and recycle.
Switch the play – If we cant play forward, can we switch the ball to someone who can?
Change the tempo of attack – Create and recognise overloads, 2v1 situations to play quickly, give and go’s, one touch play.
Be positive and penetrate.
Play through, beyond and around pressure.
Create overloads.
Work the ball into areas of the pitch where 2v1 situations can be created.
