PASSING TO POSSESS: Receiving Circle
- One group will begin inside the circle, each player with a ball. Second group is spread out evenly along the perimeter of the circle ready to receiving the ball from inside players.
- Inside players will maneuver through the central dribble zone then look to connect passes with perimeter players. Inside player will then try to receive the ball back from perimeter player, take receiving touch to space, dribble through central dribble zone before trying to pass and receive from another target perimeter player.
- Rotate inside and perimeter groups every 2-3 minutes.
Coaching Points:
- Game-like pace: ball and player always moving!
- Push pass technique: firm pass with inside of foot, locked ankle, checkmark foot shape, push through the ball and follow through to target player.
- All players with proper body language and "receive ready" positioning: light/soft on toes, checking and scanning before receiving passes.
- Prioritize movement and awareness before receiving the ball: body position is open to dribble zone target, allow the ball to come across the body and receive properly with back foot when possible.
Progressions:
- One-touch passing from perimeter players with more advanced group.
- Creativity with receiving touch, utilize both feet, different surfaces.
- Combination play: incorporate a quick 1-2 / give & go combination, overlaps, etc. so all players are in constant movement.
- Can be run the same way when receiving out of the air as well: choose different surfaces that players must gain confidence using when receiving the ball out of the air.
