Defensive set-piece (15 mins)

Defensive Set-Pieces: 4-4-2 Diamond

The back line are roughly 3-4 yards apart. The outside back closest to the ball sets up 2 yards inside the post so that back line can cover the far post. Everyone else man-marks

Anticipate!!!: Players need to drop w/ crossover run so they can see the ball but also run back if it goes over the head. No one lets down until ball is cleared.

Mentality!!!

11v11 Defensive Shape in Offensive half (15 mins)

General Principles in Defending

- ATTITUDE!!!!

- Hunt the ball

- When you lose it, we win it back in 5 seconds

- Double down philosophy

- no shots on our goal, get pissed off when you give up a shot or a cross

- *If you can defend, you will play. (not if you're a defender, but if you can defend!)

Roles of Each Player in 11v11 when defending in offensive half:

*most teams will play a 4-3-3 with one holding mid

When opposing Team's Center back has Possession of the ball.

- One of our Forwards (#9) applies pressure and forces them wide

- the other forward #10 takes their holding mid

- the four mids stay compact until ball is played wide. why? We don't want other team playing through the seams and beating us centrally

- back four are also compact and making sure the distance between the #9 and #4&5 isn't more than 35 yards.

When opposing team's outside back has the ball:

- our closest OM #11, applies immediate pressure on the ball. the other three mids shift over to provide good cover and balance. opposite OM needs to stay compact. Spacing between each player cannot be more than 10 yards

- Outside back #3 on that side, needs to push up on their OM/OF.

- The other 3 backs need to slide over to provide good shape (P-C-B)

- Opposite OB can be slightly in front of the two center backs.

Line of Confrontation:

Always High/Full Press

75: between half field and top of 18 yard box

60: top of the half field arc

50: half field

Defensive Corners & Set Pieces (15 mins)

Defensive Corner: Set-up.

Outside backs on the post. Two center backs and holding mid zonal. Everyone else man marks. What happends if they send two short? Two near post zonal players go out.

Alert, Attitude
