This is to provide information on playing a 2-4-2 9-aside formation.

The reason it is referred to as a 2-4-2 as opposed to a 2-5-1 or 4-3-1 is to encourage the 10 to try and stay at the highest point of the midfield and support and cooperate the 9 where possible.

Focuses on building relationships between a CB pairing as well as through the spine of a midfield three and a striker.

Allows us to play with width and depth.

Provides vertical layers which support us to progress the ball up the pitch particularly through combination play and allowing us to stay connected vertically and laterally in possession. As players get older, this is where we start to incorporate 'playing through the thirds' with sets to players facing forwards as well as third man runs.

Offers players a variety of solutions to build skills involved with maintaining possession through shapes (i.e creating triangles and diamonds.)

Develops attack-minded fullbacks that progress up and down the pitch to both attack and defend.

Supports to have numbers behind the ball with the 6 and non-ball side fullback sitting in front of the CB's, allowing midfielders the confidence to make aggressive forward runs when required.

By staying connected in possession it allows us to quickly transition into a defensive block when out of possession.
