Defenders pressured when on the ball in the back half
Switch the play using the keeper, player E plays ball to defender A
Player D (attacker quickly pressures from behind, if he wins the ball he can try and score
Player A plays a pass wide of goal to keeper B
Keeper B plays to defender C makes a decision to play out wide to player F who has run back to support or back inside to player E. Players follow thier pass to take up the new position except the keeper. Players make good decisions on moving wide and in to good open safe position. Keeper move away from goal to avoid mistakes. Back foot receiving, inside foot pass for accuracy.
Coaching emphasis on defending moving the ball from the back out. Be calm on the ball, lots of open space movement. Make sure pass with accuracy.

3 v 2 plus 3 in tight area top of the box. defenders are defending the line. Attackers ttry to break the line in phase one.
Coaching emphasis; Defenders stay compact, work together, communication, do not jump in, keep players and ball out in front of you.
Compete:point for attackers if they break the line, more importantly a point if the defender makes a pass to the wings when winning the ball
Phase 2 introduce the keeper and now the defenders must delay the attack, deny the shot, keep the players to the outside close down the angle
Coaching emphasis; stay low, stagger stance, keep them outside, do not jump in, be calm and wait for their mistake.

5 v 3 plus 2 SSG defending principles only. defenders delay/deny opportunites, win the ball and play to your winger to score a point
Coaching emphasis; Key technical aspects:
Delay/pressure - must be rapid, in this area the consequences are high. Support - supporting player also moves quickly, continually providing guidance. Compactness - defensive unit move to deny space to spoil the attackers’ progress. Control - make the play predictable; force the attackers backwards, wide or provoke a shot from long distance.
Other things to consider: Can defenders see both the attacker and the ball at all times? Could it be an idea for defenders to use reference points (eg. goal posts, 6 yard box) do not back up on your keeper. Are the players aware to scan and screen for switches of play? Speak to attacking central midfielder to dribble with the ball instead of passing (at the start point) to see how it effects play.
In Defence: Be on the front foot (ready to intercept). Cover and balance Check shoulders (for lateral cover and balance), Re-assess and make decisions, tracking players, Recovery runs (get goal side for cover and balance)

BU 12 defending (15 mins)
3 players in each group, one ball 10 x 10 area
Play starts with pass from player A to B
Player B will attempt to play the ball to his team mate on the outside player C tries to deny the pass, slow the play and when he wins the ball plays it to the outside to his team mate for a point
coaching points: good balance, quick press, cut off the angle, don't jump in, arms length from attacker, stagger body movement, use the hips for quick turning.
can you get your body between the attacking player and the ball? use appropriate contact and arms to help
