This lesson plan will help your team understand the basic ideas of COUNTER ATTACKING. Exploiting open space (dribble, pass, shot) is the key to making a successful counter attack.

Directional Possession
Terminology
"change it" or "Switch it"
"release out of pressure"
- two teams in the middle with neutrals on either end of the field
- team looks to play one side of the square, keep possession and play the opposite side = 1 point
- if possession is lost, you must restart
- 90 sec games, rotate neutrals
COACHING POINTS:
1) Quickly find and exploit open space
2) Find passing lanes that are able to "break lines" or take defenders out of the play
3) If possession is lost, try and win the ball back under 5 seconds.
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
This exercise will improve your teams ability to relieve pressure (#6, #8, and #10) and release wide players (#7 and #11)into a counter attack to create a scoring opportunity on goal.
Who?: #6, #8, #10, #7, and #11
Size?: 50 yds wide X 35 yds long
- Ball is played into central square.
- Attacking team (red) must connect 3 passes before releasing the ball forward and wide
- Once ball is released, all players can go forward to score on full size goal
- If defensive team (blue) wins ball, they must find outlet player (coach)
*Progresion: Add attacking #9, add more defensive pressure, stipulations such as finish 1 touch, etc.
Coaching Points:
1) Exploit open space to attack
2) Dynamic runs in order to overload spaces (get numerical advantage)
3) Notice the point of transition (create support infront, behind, and beside)
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Who? 6v6 or 8v8 game (both teams playing 3-2-3)
Size? Full Size Field (50X80yds)
Play? 2X12 min games, with 2 min rest between games
Looking for opportunities to coach the Counter Attack, once POSSESSION IS Won.
If team is counter attacking, it is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to counter -press (do not have the numbers or the correct spacing). Counter Attack = Block & Build = Counter-Press.
Look for team to exploint open space or areas of the field defensive team is unorganized (out of shape)

-Player 2 will play ball into Player 1 and continues run to support the play
-Player 1 will "set" ball for Player 2 who will play the ball long to Player 3
-Repeat from opposite side and always follow pass
**Progression: Add wall pass between Player 1 and 3 after Player 3 receives the ball
Coaching Points
- Create necessary space in order to complete a successful wall pass
- Support each pass quikly
- Demand the ball
