Warm-up (10 mins)

Organization:

Activity takes place in the middle third of the field, less about 5 yards on either side. Two teams of 5 each, two soccer balls.

Instructions:

Each team has five players. White team plays N-S and Red team plays E-W. To begin each team has a ball and every player must touch the ball before getting from one side to the other. When as pass is made to an outside player the player making the pass must switch with that player. After a few minutes one ball is taken away and both teams play with only one ball.

Coaching Points:

-Reinforce passing technique

-Awareness of the next action before it happens

-Timing of movement off the ball - checking to ball - opening up space - 3rd man runs

-Under no pressure introduce the idea of passing into the player providing the length/depth and the visual cues associated with that pass (eye contact, player moving into passing lane, ball out of feet head up to find passing lane)

Progressions:

P-Take one ball away

P-Only one player in the middle has to touch the ball.

P-Goal keepers for each team play on the line and may use their hands when they receive the ball.

Main-Theme 1 (20 mins)

Organization:

Ideally using 2/3rds (Can set up at half field if space is constrained to half a field). Set up as shown. 3v2 in the midfield third, with 2 target players for red and a server for white, and 2v2 plus a GK in the attacking third.

Instructions:

Play always starts with the server positioned in the center circle. The coach will at times slow the play so the server waits for the defense to push out and get set in the attacking third before they play a ball into the midfield third.

-The midfield player who passes the ball into the forward is allowed to run into the attacking third and join in the attack.

Coaching Points:

-Midfielders look to play into forwards as soon as the passing lane is open, and the pass is on.

-Forwards make angled checking runs into midfielders when the pass is on (Visual cue: Midfielder takes a touch out of their feet and gets their head up, eye contact)

-One forward should look to stay high, and forwards should not get pulled too far apart (E-W) (Visual Cue-As one forward checks to the ball the other forward need to fill the space available)

-Wide midfield players should look to unbalance the defense by making runs into the attacking third.

-Creating passing lanes using depth and width

Main-Theme 2 (20 mins)

Organization:

Ideally using 2/3rds, but due to space constraints can be set up in half of a field. Set up as shown. Now 3v3 but the serving player can be an outlet, and 2v3 +1 GK in the attacking third.

(The target players from the previous activity are added into the game, one in the middle third and one in the final third)

Instructions:

Attacking players are trying to combine to score a goal, for this progression two players from the midfield third are allowed to cross into the attacking third but only on a pass. Defending payers (Red Team) try to pass or dribble through the counter attacking goals located on the midfield line.

Coaching Points:

-Midfielders look to play into forwards as soon as the passing lane is open.

-Wing midfielders should provide options centrally when the ball is played into the attacking third from the opposite side

Progressions:

P-Midfield players can penetrate on the dribble

Main-Theme 3 (20 mins)

Organization:

Play to two large goals with GK, White team GK serves to two backs to start play.

Instructions:

Midfield players are, to begin with, restricted to the middle zone until a ball is played from the midfielders to the forwards, at that point all players may enter the attacking thrid. Ball cannot skip over a zone, must be played through the zone

Coaching Points:

-Identify the best player to advance to the next zone when the pennetrating pass is made. Which player entering the next zone can have the best opprotunity to quickly get a shot on goal.

-Players must be aware of the number in each zone, in the midfield zone they are number even so the speed of play must be quicker. Midfielders should be aware of this and provide options to play to forwards as soon as the opprotunity is available.

-Quickly provide support with good angles to the forward players as a pass is made from the midfield zone to the final third.
