Warm-Up - Rondo (5 mins)

Pass and Move Rondo (4 Players) or Basic Rondo (5 Players or more)

For the pass and move rondo, Players must make a good pass and then find an empty line in the hexagon. See the example on the left. If Possible, you want the players to move to the line closest to where they just passed. Don't have them run away and sacrifice the passing lane.

Coaching Points:

We want the players to be on their toes and fully engaged, focused on using proper technique and making good decisions. Eventually, we want the players to be able to think ahead in setting up the defense so they can make 2nd Line or 3rd Line passes that bypass or even spilt the defense. On the defensive side, we want to see the defenders work in tandem, using the concepts of pressure and cover to coordinate their efforts.

-- Can we keep the ball moving?

-- Can we keep the ball on the floor?

-- Can we break down the defense and get them to chase?

-- Can we split the defense? (2 defenders)

-- Receive on the back foot

Dribbling Box (15 mins)

SET-UP:

12x12 yard box

Make the box larger to accommodate more players

or Make the box smaller to make the warm up more challenging

Each player with a ball

Players must avoid dribbling in Straight Lines or Circles, and must not contact each other

Change of Speed: Freeze, 1st Gear, 2nd Gear, 3rd Gear

Spatial Awareness: Keep head up to find space and avoid collisions

Change of direction, dynamic movements

Ball control: toe taps, foundations/bells, making sharp cuts with the outside of the foot and inside of the foot, sole rolls, pullback turns, Cruyff turns, roulette turns, etc.

FOR YOUNGER PLAYERS, INTRODUCE THE CONCEPT OF RONALDO/MESSI/XAVI (OR INIESTA) -- SEE BELOW FOR DESCRIPTION.

FOR OLDER PLAYERS, INSTEAD INCORPORATE MORE DIFFICULT TURNS AND SKILLS INTO THE EXERCISE.

PROGRESSION:

Coaches serve as defenders depending on the level of their group.

Adjust the level of defensive pressure to allow the players to have success while creating more intensity and excitement in the exercise

Introduce concept of Ronaldo/Messi/Xavi:

Players dribbling with toe pointed down and in, contacting ball with the bottom outside portion of their laces. They have their head up to see the field, space, and other players. They are always scanning.

Ronaldo -- when players see space, they accelerate quickly and drive hard into space with bigger touches and longer strides like Ronaldo

Messi -- when space is tight, the players dribble with shorter strides and touch the ball with every step to keep it close while they look for openings like Messi

Xavi -- when space is very crowded, the players make sharp turns to find new space like Xavi or Iniesta

As play continues pick a few players to serve as additional defenders with the coaches and when they win a ball, they go on the offensive and the player that loses the ball becomes a defender.

Keep the excitement level and intensity as high as possible.

1v1 Barcelona (20 mins)

Competitive Cauldron -- 1v1 (to 2v2 if we have time)

This is a scalable high-pressure game that can be adjusted to present many different challenges to players, forcing them to continuously find new soccer solutions on the fly.

Organization:

20x10 yard space divided and marked out into 4 adjacent 5x10 yard spaces as shown

8 players divided into 4 pairs

4 balls

Cone Goals

Fours games of 1v1 are played simultaneously, one in each section. Players try to score as many times as possible in 1 minute. Score by dribbling over the end line. Notice how the red cones goals are split in two by a yellow cone. We expect that a defender can only block 1 side of the goal. In Example 'A' you see a player beat his defender in front. This awards 1 goal. If a player can beat a defender behind (Example 'B') they are awarded 2 points.

After each 1-minute game, players rotate so that each one is facing a new opponent. Each player play 4 games, thus playing each opponent from the other team once. After a quick water break, players return to play 2v2 to 4 goals, with two playing areas combine to form 1 larger space. 2 games of 2v2 are played side by side. Play 2-minute games before switching teams.

Key Points

Adjust speed of dribble

High quality skill moves to beat defender
