Functional practice working on the team defending set out in a 3-2-1 formation. Session can be catered for 10-16 players.

Set up: Half pitch, soccer 7s goal with a pole each side placed on the where the penalty box line joins the goal line. Speed ladders placed out wide infront of the final third zone.
Procedure: First player drives into the final third and tries to beat the keeper in the goals. On shootingm they must run around one of the poles and back into defend the next attacker (1v1). The next attacker goes on the first players shot. If the defender manages to touch the ball, the game is over and the attacker must run around the pole for the next attack, which is triggered from the defender touching the ball.
Progression: 2v2
Coaching points:
- Recover quickly.
- Screen goal/block shot.
- Delay/slow down opponent.
- Body position, see player away from goal/put attacker on weaker foot.

Procedure: A defender runs around the pole and is fed a ball from the goalkeeper. On receiving they play the ball up to the attacker and becomes a 1v1 game. If the defender wins the ball, they can shoot at either small target goal.
Progression: 2v2/3v3

- React quickly, press/pressure.
- Body position, low/angled.
- Delay, slow opponent down
- 2nd defender offer support/cover.

Set up: Half a pitch 5v5 defending team set up in a 3-1-0 formation . Attackers in a 0-3-1 formation.
Procedure: Attacking team play forward and attack the defenders goal. Every restart begins with the attackers. If the defenders win the ball they can score in one of the two goals.
Progression: The defending teams goalkeeper rolls the ball out to one of the players in the back four. On receiving the ball they muct drive forward and dribble through one of the gates on the opponents goal line. When the defending teams goalkeeper plays the ball, this triggers for the attaking team to attack.
Coaching points:
- Move as a unit.
- Communication - give information.
- Recovery runs.

Set up: Half pitch two teams defending team set up in a 3-2-0 attacking team set up in a 1-3-1.
Procedure: Attacking team CB (or coach) plays the ball out right or left to the WM, who bounces the ball back for the CB and then the play is switched for the opposite WM to drive up in the channel. Defending team have to react and defend their goal. If the defending team win possession they try to hit the target man (CB/Coach).

Set up: Half pitch two teams defending team set up in a 3-2-0 attacking team set up in a 1-3-1.
Procedure: Attacking team CB (or coach) plays the ball up to the CM, who bounces the ball back for the CB to play out to a WM. With the defending teams CM pressing the attacking CM it allows for the WM to play the striker in. Defending team's CB has to make the decision to press the striker, forcing them to play the ball back OR drop off and angle body to allow for the stiker to turn and redue his passing options forward. If the defending team win possession they try to hit the target man (CB/Coach).

Set up: Players pair up and work across an area taking in turn to attack & defend.
Procedure: working in paris the players take in turn to attack and defend (1v1), Player 1 dribbling forward with the ball performing ball mastery techniques (inside-outside) and player 2 the defender jockying.
Progression #1: Players now get into groups of 4 and work in pairs (2v2).
Progression #2: Players now get into groups of 6 and work in 3s (3v3).
Coaching points:
- Close down opponent - body shape/positioning.
- Support - othering cover and ready to close down.
- Balance - pulling across as a unit.
