Positional possession

Positional possession (20min)

Field setup: As large as possible in the allocated space to match the number of players involved within the session.

1) The objective of the exercise is to complete ten passes as a team for a point while maintaining correct team shape. (U9s may have to lower the number to 5)

2) Each time the ball goes out, play the ball to the same team to set up properly and play out of the back using their centre backs.

3) After 5 minutes - play the ball to the opposite team when the ball goes out.

Note: Stand in the middle of the field to help direct players with their positioning.

Instruct players how to get the ball to the opposite side of the field and when the correct time to do this is.

Full field game (Gates)

Gate game (40min)

Field setup:

The largest field possible in the allocated space that makes sense for the amount of players.

Gates: Cones 10m apart.

1) To score a goal, the team in possession of the ball must dribble or pass the ball through either of the gates to a teammate before scoring.

Note: Even when a team wins possession in the attacking half they must recycle the ball backwards and go through a gate (going forwards) to score.
