Formation shows individual and team responsibilities on defensive corners for 11 v 11.

Players at A (near post) and B move to ball when opposition takes short corner. Player at C moves to A (near post) to cover A.

Session Overview:

Goal - All players and coaching staff have a clear understanding of how to defend a corner kick

Session Outline:

1. Introduction – Defensive Responsibilities of Team

(i) Be organized, communication, be the first to the ball, understand and be accountable to your responsibilities

2. Goalkeeper, Near/Far Post Player & Zone Responsibilities

(i) Goalkeer - Organize and communicate, must win everything in their 6, if can not catch the ball, must be punched away

(ii) Near Post – Body positioning, adjustment with the flight of the ball

(iii) Far Post – Body positioning, adjustment with the flight of the ball

(iv) Near Post Zone – Win everything in your zone, must be fearless, good in the air

(v) Central Zone - Win everything in your zone, must be fearless. Should be most dominant player in the air.

(vi) Far Post Zone - Win everything in your zone, must be fearless, good in

the air

3. Near/Far Post & Zonal Demonstration

4. Man-Marking Players & Outlet Players

(i) Man-Marking - Win your individual battle, your responsible for your mark,

touch tight

(ii) Outlet Player - Ball side, outside the 18, responsibility to be first to the ball cleared out of the 18, if goalkeepr wins it can counter attack through this player.

(iii) Attackers split pitch as shown which will either persuade opposition to keep 3 or 4 players back (thus giving us overload in box) or go 1v1.

6. Defending a Short Corner:

(i) If the opposing team sends two players on the ball – Near post player and outlet player go out, far post becomes near post player, ZONAL PLAYERS DO NOT MOVE!
