Basic throw-in

Organization:

  • 3 Players, 2 throwing and 1 receiving, footballs. Players 25m apart.
Method:
  • Player receiving runs towards thrower calling for the ball while pointing behind them.
  • Thrower launches ball over receiver who turns and spins onto the ball.
  • Receiver collects the ball and passes to thrower at opposite end to continue the cycle.
  • Rotate players every minute or two.

Coaching Points:

  • Calling for the ball loudly with clear hand signal to thrower.
  • Quality throw-in, correct technique.
  • good movement to spin away.

Bounce pass throw-in

Organization:

  • 3 players, (optional defender for 4th player), football. 25m distance between players.
Method:
  •  Central player moves to receive off thrower.
  • At 8/10m receiver collects ball from throw and plays a 1 or 2 touch return to thrower.
  • Thrower clips a long ball to player in behind.
  • Repeat throw-in cycle with player who received long pass. 

Coaching Points:

  • Communication.
  • Quality technique on throw-ins and passing.
  • Distance between thrower and receiver to allow time on the ball.

  • 3 players(optional 4th for defender), football.
  • 25m length of area.
Method:
  • Central player runs to receive the ball off thrower.
  • Receiver plays a one touch pass to thrower and moves into space to receive.
  • Throwers now passes to player in space who switches play to opposite end.
  • Throw-in cycle repeats at opposite end.

Coaching Points:

  • Quality technique of throw and pass.
  • Good movement and communication.
  • Distances between players to create time and space.

Organization:

  • 4 players (optional defenders can be added).
  • 1 thrower, 2 MF and 1 FW.
Method:

2 MF set up to receive, FW higher up the pitch.

MF players make runs to swap positions.

Ball thrown down the line to player in space who passes the ball forward to FW.

Coaching Points:

  • Good communication and movement. Players must know roles.
  • Maintain distances between players to create space.
  • Quality technique on thrown in, control and passing.
