Description

Dribbling games help the players develop the ability to carry the ball on the ground with balance, footwork, speed, change of direction, and coordination. These techniques are key to further the discovery if the beauty of soccer; possessing them allows players to quickly reach a satisfying level of play.

Although you will find these games numbered to represent a progression from easier to more difficult exercises and games, that doesn't mean that you must follow the activities in order. Presenting a complex problem on occasion challenges the more talented players, while using easier exercises gives the less talented players the confidence and motivation to try harder.

Parallel Lines (15 mins)

Organization:

2 parallel lines 2-5 yds apart.

1 ball per player

-Two players stand side by side on the first line, facing the second line

-When the coach signals, both players dribble their ball down to the second line, then turn around and dribble it back.

-The first player to dribble the ball 10 times across both of the parallel lines wins.

-To maintain the control of the ball while changing direction, the players should experiment with the use of different surfaces (outside, inside, the sole, and the heel) of both feet

Progression:

-Vary the distance between the parallel lines, up to 5 yds

-None of the players should touch the ball in the central zone formed by the two parallel lines. Start with a zone that is only 1 yd wide and later extend it to 2 yds, 3 yds, 4 yds.

-The ball must be played with the non-dominant foot only.

Coaching Points:

Guided Questions:

The Tunnel

Organization:

1 ball per 2 palyers

-Two players face each other about 1 yd apart.

-Player 1 has 30 seconds to pass the ball as many times as possible through the tunnel formed by the separated legs of Player 2.

-The first player kicks the ball through the partner's legs and then runs behind Player 2 to return-kick the ball to the original side.

-Player 2 remains still and counts the number of goals scored by the opponent.

-The players switch roles, and Player 2 gets 30 seconds to pass the ball.

-The winner is the player who, using either the left or the right foot, passes the ball more often through the tunnel formed by the opponent.

Progression:

-The player who forms the tunnel stands in a neutral zone of 2 yds. The player with the ball passes it from outside the zone through the opponents legs, using either the right or left foot. The stationary player counts the number of goals scored in 30 seconds from outside of the neutral zone. Both players alternate roles until both have competed twice. the winner is the player who scores the most goals in the two attempts.

-Immediately after a goal is scored, the player who forms the tunnel changes the position of one goalpost (one foot) by pivoting and changing directions.

Coaching Points:

- What part of the foot helps you get the most goals?

-Player 2, after having received the ball, practices the same dribbling and lifting their head to count, but goes in the opposite direction, while Player 3 indicates different numbers of fingers.
