Session Objective: In this session, we are looking at getting our back 4 players to "open up" and give our GK short passing options, so we can play out from the back
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Set Up:
4 (red) cones mark an "end zone"
2 (yellow) cones mark a "base line"
Players work in a group of 3
(multiple groups of 3 work at the same time)
Instructions:
1 players starts by waiting on the base line
1 players starts with a ball inside the end zone
1 player applies pressure on the ball carrier
The objective is to get the ball from the end zone, to the base line, then back into the end zone ASAP
The ball carrier passes when they dribble outside the end zone
The ball carrier passes and then opens up, to provide a pass back option to the waiting player
The waiting players can either drive into the end zone or pass to the player that has now opened up.
When the ball enters the end zone or play breaks down, the players reset into a different position than they were just in.
Variation/Progression:
Time limits can be given
Touch limits can be given
Adjust distances as needed
Key Coaching Points:
Remind players on the outside to call for the ball, and be on their toes ready to receive.
The "cue" to "open up", is "as the ball is being played back to the GK"
Timing the pass will keep quality in the actions.
