PHASE 1: PASSING OPTIONS (30 mins)

ORGANISATION

in the 11 v 11 game the blue team will be playing a 4-3-3 with 1 & 2 in CM. The red team will be playing with a 4-2-3-1formation.

PITCH SIZE

the same area is used for both drill & SSG

width 50 & length 18YD box > far edge centre circle (60 yds)

there is also a 5 yd channel set up ready for quick transition to SSG

CM zone 20x20 marked out with flat markers

2 back 4 units with 4 v 2 in CM zone with trigger from coach at point A

balls at half way line x 20

PHASE 1 (10 minutes) set up:

The drill starts when the ball is played to a CH on either back 4

all players then move in relation to the ball

Conditions

*the 6 players in CM zone must stay in zone and have a 2 touch limitation and are encouraged to rotate and step into space for a bounce pass

*the 2 back 4 units are encouraged to visualise passing options with a choice of playing through/over or around to to reach target of one of opposite back 4

*both units are limited to 3 touch max and are encouraged to use player from opposite back for to simulate a pass into wide player or striker eg longer pass from No 2 > No 2 simulates are diagonal switch to wide player or a pass to opposite 3 is a forward pass to wide player same side.

*a high tempo passing style is encouraged with praise given if the drill includes a passage of play using CM zone to link to opposite back 4 unit

*if the 2 reds in the CM zone win the ball or intercept a forward pass they can score in either small goal and play starts again from the coach

*to promote realism the 4 blues in the CM zone are limited to 2 passes when the ball enters to highlight that they are a link through the thirds or for switch of play

**this drill is ideal to develop defenders distribution and passing options to play out from the back + it highlights the use of the bounce pass from a defensive midfielder to create overloads on opposite side.

*The loading is high for the 2 reds in the CM zone so change with 2 blue midfield players after 2 mins of play (3x2 mis)

PHASE 2: PLAYING PAST THE PRESS

PHASE 2: same geography as phase 1 with 3 v 3 now in CM zone (20 mins)

playing out from the back with back 4 and midfield 3 (2&1)

Conditions

*The 3 blue midfield players in the CM zone must stay in zone and are limited to 2 touch max & the 3 red CM players can leave the central zone & press on the blue CH's 1st touch after pass from coach to start drill.

* If the blues play out using the CM zone to link directly or use a bounce pass to switch play before playing to opposite back unit they score a goal & red team can score in either goal if they win ball back/intercept pass.

*duration: 2 mins only 1 red can exit CM zone to press with red players sharing the load as the ball is switched ( this creates a 3 v 2 overload for blue team in CM zone ) > 1 min recovery > 2 mins with 2 reds pressing > 1 min recovery > final 2 mins with all 3 reds allowed to exit zone for high press/

after the 3 x 2 min drills the midfield 3 change colours and drill is repeated & during the 1 min recovery the midfield 6 juggle ball & the 8 blues perform a technical passing exercise both clockwise/anticlockwise with max 2 touch

Problem/solution 1 with lone striker set for press

as the ball is played to the blue CH the red player arcs his press to block the passing line to 2nd CH & prevents switch of play

solution:

Encourage the blue CH to give more depth to receive ball to increase pressing distance for red player and creating a better angle and space so he can use his RB to bounce pass to 2nd CH who can play out opposite side

*highlight that the FB needs to stay high and wide to receive pass

Problem 2 with solution with red 9 & 10 pressing high

red No 9 presses blue CH and blocks off RB passing lane showing him on to his weaker left side and setting trap for 2nd press from red No 10 on blue LSCH

Solution:

the press from the 2nd red player leaves an overload in CM zone so blue deep lying midfielder can be used to play out either directly through 1/3rds or bounce pass to FB if remaining red in CM zone puts pressure on ball

*highlight the need for defenders to move in relation to ball so feet can always be seen for passing lines & encourage midfield players to step in to space and open up body and scan to see pictures prior to receiving ball

keypoints

*defenders position in relation to ball

*depth & width to receive ball

*body position

*passing tempo to switch play to prevent oppositions shift

*use of limited touches in central areas & use of bounce pass to create overloads on opposite side

*decision to play through/around or over press

SSG

SSG: Organisation/Set up 30 mins (6x5 min games)

*In a 11v11 game both teams will play with a 4-3-3 formation with red team 1&2 CM & blue team 2&1 CM

geography is same as drill with channel now live to give extra width to pitch and as a tactical reference point with stipulation that only 1 blue FB allowed in a channel at 1 time with opposite FB covering around with single CH

20 balls at point A with pass from coach to blue CH as trigger to start play

* Blue team are set up in a 3-3-2 with red team set up in a 3-2-2 + GK

Conditions

* Blue team must play through midfield zone or link with midfield zone player to play out or around before trying to score.

* If red team win possession they have 8 seconds to try and score in mini goals.

* In games 1-3 midfield players must stay in central zone with games 4-6 open play with no stipulations.

Keypoints

* use a guided discovery style of coaching to revisit/emphasise the coaching points from the MDG.

* encourage both teams to evaluate and discuss problems/solutions inbetween each game with supervision/guidance from coaches.
