Individual or unit defending (20 mins)
Setup:
- Each dribbling lane is 15 x 7 yards
- 15 yard lane split into thirds
- 12 players - 3 attackers and 3 defenders on each team
- Cones
- Pinnies
- Balls
Activity:- Each activity is played for a few minutes. The defending team starts with 12 points and the defending team loses 1 point each time the ball carrier successfully dribbles into middle-third, the final third, or across the goal line. The maximum number of points that the defending team can lose against one attacking player is 3 points. When an attacker gets through to the goal line they start from the top again. The same applies if the ball is kicked out or a defending player wins possession and dribbles the ball over the attackers goal line. If the defender dribbles the ball over the attackers goal line, they get back 3 points. The defenders can choose to each defend a zone or more than one defends a zone. The attackers decide if they want to all dribble at the same time or one at a time.
- Switch roles of attacking and defending teams after a few minutes. During this period, the coach can instruct and demonstrate correct actions and principles.
- Once both teams have defended, give the teams about 2 minutes to work out how they would like to defend to be most effective and lose the least amount of points. Then start again and run each activity again for 2 minutes each but this time have a contest.
