Coaching Points: 

  • DENY - DELAY - DIRECT - DEFEND: Get out to the ball, slow down, delay them, show away from goal towards touchline, Cut off overload side and force into a 1v1, make contact, be aggressive, use whole body, arms are key MUST DELAY!!!
  • PRESSING TRIGGERS: We must start to recognise these, head down, back to goal, bad touch, poor pass, lofted ball etc. Particularly important in overload is area of pitch. If we are close to goal and we are delaying, there comes a point we just need to go to the ball and shut down.
  • CUT OFF OPTIONS: Position yourself so you can try to cut off second player and make into 1v1 by killing the space in between. Body position should show away from the overload.
  • BREACHES: When we are breached, we must recover instantly, shortest route to goal. KILL SPACE. Don't panic, relax.
  • RECOVERY RUNS: Players out the game, when we identify there's an overload, we must sprint to get back to help our teammate who should be delaying and kill any overload opportunities by getting back into shape.

Ball Striking (5 mins)

Description: Ball striking against wall. Both sides, no staionary balls, different striking techniques, varying challenges, eg. low drill, clip, side foot, swerve etc

GRP: Race to Play 1v12v12v2 (25 mins)

Description: 1v1: Players start back to back as shown and on orange players command they run round corner cone and onto the pitch, first person to be on the pitch gets the ball and attacks 1v1. Game lasts till a goal is scored or 20 seconds max.

2v1: As before but the orange plays for team he passes to 2v1. 

2v1>2v2: As above but now the teammate of the defender recovers to create a 2v2.
