Functional Practice (45 mins)
Practice Organisation.
Blue's are (1-4-3-3) Oranges are 1-4-4-2
Practice starts from orange centre back (not in practice - just feeding in). Footballs next to that position - I will guide on how I want them to restart.
Oranges look to score in the big goal.
Blues look to score with a pass into 11 for 1 or pass into 9 for 2 (must be past half way line).
Coaching Detail.
Primary Player (Right back - number 2).
Potential Pictures
- Defending the big diagonal
- Ball into wide players feet and fronted up
- Ball into wide players feet and they are back to you.
- Overloaded.
Big Diagonal
- Read triggers - head up, foot back be ready to drop.
- Body shape to see ball and man.
- Hips, feet and shoulders key.
- DO NOT GET DONE OVERYOUR HEAD. Better to be deeper and moving onto it than the other way.
-
Detail for defending fronted up
- Don't let the ball past your left shoulder - keep the play outside you.
- Manage your wide player to prevent the ball going to feet with quality. Can they cut it out? If not rush them?
- Approach to the ball quick as ball travels then slow down on 1st touch.
- If you can prevent attacker turning or playing forward
- Sit down (get a low centre of gravity on the balls of your feet)-
- If they receive facing forwards adopt a side on position – predictability - show outside.
- Show one way outside - chest between ball and goal.
- Arms make the 1st move (block)
- Don't plant feet, be light like a boxer.
- Bend knees push off - don't pull your body.
- Be patient, Don't commit 1st. Make them beat you.
- Match Footwork - every step they take you take.
- Block crosses - make yourself big.
- Be ready to race - if they knock it past = bump and block.
- Tackle with correct foot - distance is key
- Execution of tackle - be aggressive and win the ball, no floppy ankles.
Defending behind
Get there quick then slow - stop turns.
Speed, timing and body shape of approach
Distances (TOUCH TIGHT) and bodyshape.
Look at ball through legs not over shoulder.
Be aggressive but don't foul only try and pinch of you are sure.If not force to play backwards.
Be ready with bump and blocks if the ball is set back for a one two or they run it past you.
Matching attackers footwork
Hip movement
Dominating 1v1
Don't be scared of body contact.
Overloaded.
- Drop and narrow, keep the play outside you * have to see both players.
- Delay for support from your wide player.
- If the ball goes to higher of the two it then becomes defending 1v1 - back into other detail.
- Show them the corner flag.
