Cone Shape Work (Myself)
* Full size pitch to be used
* All players to take part - players can double up on positional cones
* Pitch split into 3 sets of cones
Red = Defensive shape
Orange = Transitional shape both attacking and defensive
Blue = Attacking shape
- Coach to call a colour cone / phase of play and players need to quickly react and move to the relevant set of cones.
- Team set up us 4-1-3-2
- Coach to add in LB, RB, LW, RW and centre call where players need to shuffle as appropriate.
- CF's to press FB's when RB.LB call is made - Team then shuffles accordingly. - Other CF splits pitch in half, left or right sided CM shuffles wider and other CM's shuffle over, same with back 4 if FB goes to press the LR or RW (this is ageneral example ofhow the team shoudl shuffle / move)
- Progresses to a centre back taking over the commands and players react accordingly.
- Players must react quickly like in a game and quickly transition in team shape between the phases of play.
- This will create familiarity for players in the team shape and get used to movements off the ball both attacking and defending and during transitional phases.
- Once complete players to have time to stretch and rest

Shape Passing Familiarity Drill (Morris)
Description;
The team sets up in formation as the goalkeeper plays the ball out from either a goalkick or from his hands. As the ball is passed, the team adjust their positions and make movements based on triggers;
- eg full back breaking forward when the wide centre midfielder can turn and pass into the space,
opposite full back then tucking in to cover
- when gk has ball both CB's split and the FB's push high and wide, the DCM then drops into the
space but doesnt receive the ball as one of the wide CM's rotates with the DCM to receive the ball
(delay from gk), the ACM then looks to find pockets off pace and once he receives the ball one CF
should look to receive the ball at his feet and the othert shoudl look to spin in behind the defenders.
- other examples can be coached as they are seen on the pitch
The pace of the drill should increase as the players get used to the shape and the movements to make.
- Set up on full pitch with 1 team set up in 4-1-3-2 formation as shown above.
- Gk plays the ball out form the back and each team look to pass the ball in the team
shape with the end prodcut being a shot at the oppositions goal.
- MAX 3 touches
- MAX 2 touch finish
Aim;
This is to be used as the team is getting used to formation. The main aim is to get the players used to knowing where they are needed to be positionally as the ball is played around, what movement they should be looking to make and getting to know where their team mates are in the overall shape.
Key Coaching points;
- Positional Play
- Movement Triggers
Adaptation;
- More than the required number of players - add opposition in each half to passively press the team in
possession.
- Once completed players to complete Diamond Runs
