Phase: Defending

Game Cycle Subphase: Organized Defense

Zone: 3

Session Objectives

What? - To improve the team's ability to press the opposing team's back line

When? - When the opposing team's back line is in possession and we have numbers in the attacking third

Where? - Attacking third

Who? - Focus group: #7,9,11 (in conjunction with #10,8)

Why? - To recognize queues and triggers of when to press

Team Tactical Principles

1. Make it compact

2. Keep it compact

3. Pressure the player with the ball, cover and balance

4. Always press in the identified situations

5. Pressure the player with the ball, cover and balance

6. Provide cover and delay the opponents' attack when outnumbered

7. Stay in your defensive zone when the opponent changes position

8. When necessary, switch from zonal marking to player tracking

9. Anticipate the long ball played behind the defensive line

10. The defensive line moves as a collective unit

11. Take anticipated attacking action

F-Marc (Activation 1) (10 mins)

TOTAL DURATION: 10 minutes

INTENSITY: Moderate to hard

DIMENSIONS:

The course is made up of six pairs of parallel cones, approximately 5-6 yards apart.

DESCRIPTION:

- Two players start at the same time from the first pair of cones, jog along the inside of the cones and do the various exercises on the way. After the last cone, they run back along the outside. On the way back, speed can be increased progressively as players warm up.

Stage 1 (Activation 2) (15 mins)

3 rounds of 3 min. / 1 min. recovery (in between each round) / 4 min. recovery (transition to next activity)

INTENSITY: Moderate to hard

DIMENSIONS: L10xW10 yds.

DESCRIPTION:

- Pass to the right, move to the left, person across presses - NO CONTACT.

i.e. Ball starts with player 1. Player 1 passes to player 2. While the ball is traveling, player 3 sprints to press player 2. Player 2 then plays to player 4, a player from 1 sprints across to press 4, etc.

COACHING POINTS:

- Close the ball down quickly, angle of approach

PROGRESSION:

1) Change the direction of the passing sequence (i.e. pass left, move right).

2) Player receiving can choose the direction of the pass based off the pressing player's angle of approach.

Stage 2 (Orientation) (20 mins)

INTENSITY: Hard

 

DIMENSIONS: L30xW40 yds.

DESCRIPTION:

- 2 set ups so 2 games can be going on at the same time (image shows only 1 set up).

- Play 3v4 across the 2 zones. Cannot be more than 2 attackers or 2 defenders in each zone at any one time.

COACHING POINTS:

- Communication

- 1st defender: dictate play

- 2nd defender: read 1st defender's body shape, cover

- 3rd defender: provide balance

PROGRESSION:

1) Remove zones to play unrestricted

2) Play 4v5 (adding the #10 for the pressing team and the holding mid for the attacking team)

- Ball gets played in from one of the two servers and then game is live. Yellows start compact and then open up once they secure possession to try and play.

- Make it compact, keep it compact

- When to press vs. when to drop off

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER TASKS:

- #9: Dictate play (cut field in half)

- #10/8: Match up with opposing center mids

- #7/11: Read #9s body shape and provide cover or balance
