Ball Handling


Aim


To give the GK's as much time as possible getting both hands onto the ball and securing it with the view to starting an attacking play, if they put it out for a corner they are still defending!!

Collect (20 mins)

Collect


Aim


To develop speed, stamina and fitness



Instructions


Group split into 2 teams, 20 cones are spread out over each half of the pitch


A GK has to leave from the corner, 1 at a time and collect 1 cone and return this to his team before the next GK can move



Progression


2 GK's at a time (arms interlocked)



Losing team or arms coming loose - 20 push ups

Scoop (15 mins)

Scoop


Aim


We want to try to encourage the GK's to get to their feet as quickly as possible, especially when they have not collected the ball



Instructions


The GK will start on his line and facing c1.


The ball is to be placed directly to the GK which he will scoop

  • Body to floor
  • Knee down
  • Bending
  • Running towards ball and collecting
Once he has collected the ball he has to roll / throw the ball to the small goal (another player) up the pitch in a controlled and accurate manner
Progression
The GK will rise to his feet and move to save/block the shot from c2
(both sides to be worked)

Coaching points
  • The GK is securing the ball and standing up looking to move the ball out
  • Movement over to c2 is quick and the GK is setting as early as possible
  • Any block from c2 is moving the ball far away from the goal

Cut back (20 mins)

Cut Back



Aim



To have the GK making quick movements to his post to stop a cut back across the goal, if he cant, can he make the save?



Instructions


The GK will start on his line facing out.


On command, he will move over to the near post to try and stop the cut back from c1. If he fails to do this can he get in front of the ball in time?



Progression


1. Once the GK has moved, c2 can move back or forward (as the GK cannot see him) to order to receive the pass


2. The ball will start with c3 and the GK has to now move relative to the ball's position



Coaching points


  • The GK is making quick movements to get into position early
  • The GK is diving with outstretched arms and is securing the ball as early as possible
  • The GK is rising to his feet as quickly as he can

Aim


To force a series of movements to put the GK under pressure while still expecting him to secure the ball



Instructions


The GK will start on the red marker in the centre of the goal


On command, he will move forward to save the shot from c1 (which can be on or off the ground)



Progression


1. After the GK has saved the shot from c1 he has to move over the goal for a shot from c2. 

    Before this he has to go back and touch the red marker again


2 GK moves straight from c1 to c2



Coaching points


  • The GK is moving at speed and setting in a forward position
  • Does the GK turn his back on the 2nd ball?
  • Quick to set for 2nd shot

Triangle (20 mins)

Triangle


Aim


To have the GK making quick foot movements and setting for a shot on goal



Instructions


The GK will start on the rear marker facing out


On command, he will move forward to the 1st marker and set for the shot from c1 (to the right).


The GK will then rise to his feet, move backwards and tough the red marker before moving forward and setting at the other red marker for the shot from c2 (to the left)


(6 saves in total)



Progression


The coaches will move back and the shots can go to any position in the goal



Coaching points


  • The GK is moving quick and setting sharp with his weight forward
  • Eyes on the ball all the way onto his hands
  • Rising to feet as quick as possible
