Overload Breakaway (20 mins)

Organisation

Rondo grid- 5 v 2- Depending on number of players and ability you can make the grid bigger or smaller.

1 G.K, 2 Defenders and 2 attackers just outisde penalty area.

All balls to the side of rondo grid.

Session Explanation

5 v 2 in rondo- Blues try to keep the ball away from the two red defenders- As soon as reds win the ball they get a ball from the side of the grid and then attack the goal creating a 4 v 2.

After a goal or if the defenders clear the ball there are two new defenders for blues and reds (in the rondo).

Progression

Include an extra defender outside the area so blues have 3 defenders. Creates a 4 v 3.

Put in place a back 4. Make Rondo area slightly bigger and have 3 defenders- 5 v 3 in the rondo- If reds win the ball they attack back 4 creating a 5 v 4 situation.

Introduce a time limit for attackers to score a goal.

Key Coaching Points

Explosive transition from defence to attack.

Decision making of when to draw in a defender and when to pass.

Movement of forward players to create space for overloads to occur.

Quality of passing.

Different types of runs- overlaps, underlaps, third man runs.

Overload Game with Channels (20 mins)

Organisation

-Place 5 of each team inside the grid with 2 of them of each team in either wide channel.

-Any spare players place behind the grid.

Exercise:

-Coach serves ball into the grid.

-Red team looks to attack the blue.

-Reds can score in the goal or by running the ball through the gates on the end of each channel.

-The wide channels can be used by all of the players but initially only designated players are allowed in them.

-Rotate any spare players every 3 minutes or use them as receivers behind gates..

Coach Note: One player from each team in the wide channel. If player in central zone plays ball to wide player they can overlap the wide player in the channel-

If blues win the ball they could be 3 v 2 in central zone. Ask players what they can do to prevent this overload in the middle zone? Opposite wide man tuck in to central zone.

Look for overlapping runs in the channel- 2 v 1- remember players can score in wide gates also.

Progression

Wide player with team in possession can now dribble inside the central zone with the ball creating a 4 v 3 overload.

If this happens does someone take up the wide position? What if Blues win the ball? The whole channel is free.

Allow free movement in and out of channel- Only allowed a maximum of two players from each team in the channel at all times.

If two players are dragged across to defend the overlap, the opposite wide man should come inside to create an overload in central zone so it's 3 v 2- Quick switch and attack the big goal.

Wide Neutral players to 8 v8 (25 mins)

Organisation

5 v 5 with two neutral wide players to begin with. Team in possession has a 7 v 5 advantage. When ball is played to neutral player 1 player from each team can enter wide zone- Looking for an overlap or trying to prevent the overlap.

If overlap is prevented neutral player can switch play and play into central zone and team in possession can look to play out the other way.

Progression

Remove zones and play an 8 v 8 to end. Players express themselves and aim to exploit overloads if they are presented through counter attacks, 2 v 1 in wide areas or tunr overs.
