Method: Ireland Attacking In Possession
Coaching Points: Ireland to push high up the pitch. Positive passing, forward & look to support this phase of play. Goalkeeper to work with the back three to remain organized and solid while the attacking phase is building. All three departments of the team, defensive, midfield & attacking to move as one unit and ensure they support each other to keep the whole group together. As Ireland move the ball to retain positive possession, the defenders & midfielders will rotate to close any gaps in the pitch to ensure Portugal are restricted if they win possession to transition to attack Ireland

Method: Goalkeeper & defenders in a positive shape for possession
Coaching Points: As the positive possession play starts from the defence, the goalkeeper is moving with the play & organizing his three defenders to be in a compact position if the ball needs to be recycled to start again as Portugal close our passing lanes. The quality of retaining possession is enabled as the organization from the goalkeeper & his confidence to demand the ball to be recycled when no forward options are available

Method: Defensive Shape
Coaching Points: Goalkeeper to create area in front of himself to enable him to move & collect any potential through ball from Portugal. Goalkeeper has a solid line of five defenders to create a stronger barrier & holds them in a positive position. All other Ireland players are behind a Portugal player & making it very difficult for Portugal to play a penetrating forward pass. Shaded area shown is created & commanded by the goalkeeper.

Method: Defending Corner Set piece
Coaching Points: Goalkeeper is working in a semi zonal marking system. All Ireland players after the penalty spot will try to make it difficult for Portugal to get a penetrating run for the crossed ball. Goalkeeper has an 8 yard shaded area he can move into to take any cross from the corner kick. The creation of this space should enable the goalkeeper to command & dominate the high ball with minimal opposition pressure

Method: Defensive shape against opposition from a wide attack
Coaching Points: Goalkeeper is ensuring all opposition players are been covered. Shaded area is where the goalkeeper can command for any attacking high ball. Ireland players in the shaded area are positioned well to be on the forward point to attack any cross that may fall short of the shaded area.
