Play-Practice- Play
Greet every player as they arrive for practice and outline what they will be doing tonight.
Immediately start and put players into small sided games. As the first two players arrive they begin by playing 1v1.
Phase 1 - “Deliberate Play”
Children learn best when they get to experience periods of unstructured play where they can experiment on their own, it promotes enjoyment, inclusion and development. These three factors have been proven to increase motivation to continue playing.
Role of Coach in this phase - to ensure safety, monitor the games and “check in” of the players. Monitoring the games includes making sure the games are not lopsided and providing adequate breaks. During the breaks the coach can ask guiding questions to lead the players towards the goal and objectives of the session. “Checking in ” refers to checking the player’s involvement and gauging their emotional state through active or in some cases avoidance of participation. In short showing the players how much you care about them right from the start of a practice.
Phase 2 Practice
Using activities to create game-like situations that create problems for the players to solve and the coach to assist with the problem solving process. A simple checklist - does it look like football? Is it organised? Is it challenging? Are their repetitions? (Of the topic being worked on) . The coaching consists predominantly of positive reinforcement and normalising mistakes which are an essential part of the learning process. During this stage coaches are encourage to set up small group activities that focus on the topic being worked on that day.
Phase 3 - Play
This phase is for checking to see how much if any of the practice phase has transferred to each player. In this phase the coach sets up 2 teams of equal numbers and lets the them play uninterrupted with the coach just monitoring the safety of the players and looking at each player to assess individual learning.

OBJECTIVE: To improve our ability to master the ball by using different parts of the foot to control the ball and move it in different directions.
PLAYER ACTIONS: Using direct parts of the foot to manipulate & move ball - small Messi touches, Running with the ball- big Ronaldo touches.
ORGANISATION: Divide your (25W x 35L) pitch into two 15W x 25L pitch with a small goal in each corner; 4 goals on each small pitch. Split the players into two groups with each group playing on a small pitch. Each player has a ball.
CHALLENGE: On the coaches command the players try to dribble their ball through as many goals as possible in 90sec without their ball touching another players. ( Ask players to use different parts of their foot- laces, big toe, little toe, sole. For more challenge introduce skill moves eg. Toe taps etc)
Progression 1
Select one player to be a bandit who can steal a players ball. The player losing the ball must steal a ball back from another player.
Progression 2
Select two bandits
Progression 3
2 v 1 or 1 v 1
Divide the whole group into 2 teams; 1 team on the coach’s right & the other on the left. Consider using the whole pitch ( more space) initially then advance to a small half pitch (less space - more challenge). Each team will have 2 goals to defend & 2 to score in. Prior to playing a ball onto the pitch, the coach will announce which team gets 2 players & which has 1. Players try to win the ball & score in either goal. Game is over when a goal scored or the ball goes out of play. The coach plays another ball onto the pitch for the next players to play.
Progression 4
Play 2v 2 (More challenging )
Progression 5
Play 3v2 or 3v3 (Even more challenging )
