Description

WHO - (Directly - 11,  9, 7, 8, 6, 10) and (Indirectly - 4, 5, 1)

WHERE - Mainly in the attacking half, specifically in the central channels of the attacking side of field and the flank channels in the attacking half.

WHEN - When we have lost the ball in the attacking half from a misplaced pass or 1v1 duel and the opponents are in a defensive position, lacking any width or ability to execute a good attack. The ball can be won in a 1v1 situation out wide using the sideline as another defender, the ball can be won in areas of numerical superiority (i.e. 1 opponent versus the midfield-3). The ball can be won if the opponent plays backwards, encouraging the forward-3 to stay alert in case of the pass in the backwards direction.

WHAT - Depending upon where the ball was lost, if it was in front of the forward-3, the forward-3 slide across to where the ball is and the midfield line slide across to where the ball is to create 2 lines of 3 in anticipation of the opposition trying to dribble through them or play a pass in-between the lines. If the opponent changes the direction of the attack and moves the ball to the other side, the nearest defender looks to apply pressure to the opponent with the ball and the midfield-3 look to slide across to the other side of the field to deny the opponent the chance to attack down the flank, If the opponent choose to play long, the GK needs to be alert for their long ball.

WHY - Winning the ball sooner rather than later. It is better to win the ball back in the opponent's half - when we have just built up and have no arrived awaiting to create a goal scoring opportunity - than to allow the opposition an easy attack on our own goal.

HOW - Individual defending in the 1v1 situation. Individual defending in the 1v2 situations. Defending as a pair in 2v3 situation. Pressure the opponent to force them into a rushed decision resulting in a loose ball or 1v1 duel.

Transition - Attacking to defensive transition in the opponent's half (10 mins)

Transition - Attacking to defensive transition in the opponent's half

The BLUE TEAM, playing in a 3-3 formation (3 centre midfielders & 3 Strikers) are attempting to build up in the middle third to create goal scoring opportunities against the GREEN TEAM who are playing in a 1-3-1 formation (1 goalkeeper, 3 central defenders and 1 central midfielders).

If the GREEN team win the ball, it is their objective to dribble over the half way line.

FIFA rules apply (Offside, throw ins, free kicks, penalties etc.

If the BLUE team score a goal, the game will restart from the Coach on the half way line who will play a ball in to one of the BLUE players. If the GREEN team dribble over the half way line to earn a point, the game will restart from the Coach on the half way line who will play a ball in to one of the BLUE players.

Coaching Points

- If the ball is in front of the forward-3, I am focussed on how they slide across together to act as a defensive.

- If the ball is in front of the forward-3, I am focussed on how the midfield-3 slide across and act as a 2nd line of defence behind the forward line and then intercept any passing balls being made inbetween the forward and midfield line.

- If the opponents win the ball inbetween the forward and midfield line, I am looking to see if the midfield line shift across and defend the wide areas by getting goal side and defending the space.

- If the opponents attack centrally, I am looking to see how forward line get back and help defend the space in front of the goal.

- Finally, when they win the ball back, are the players picking their head up to play to an open player to then quickly attack again.

Progression

The BLUE TEAM, playing in a 3-3 formation (3 centre midfielders & 3 Strikers) against the GREEN TEAM who are playing in a 1-2-2 formation (1 goalkeeper, 2 central defenders and 2 central midfielders).

As the session moves on. The BLUE team will now have a goalkeeper and their own penalty box. This has now increased the area in which they have to work with. Rather than just transitioning to defend an entire line which the opponent mostly attacks wide on. The BLUE team will now have to transition to defend the wide areas, but with the goal being central, this gives the opposition more incentive to attack down the middle, causing the BLUE team to transition into different areas than before.
