Defending Principles.

Organization:
20x20 yard area.
Instructions:
- Players are divided into two teams to play 5v5 or 6v6 depending on the numbers of players available.
- Server plays the ball into the area for the game to start.
- Players must make atleast 2-3 passes to break out of the box.
- Attacking team must start by going through the outside cone.
- Defending team must quickly retreat and recover back into position to face a counter attack.
- Defending team needs to set up in a defensive shape of a back three and a midfield two for for 5v5.
- If the defending team wins the ball, they look to score in the counter goals or play into the server.
Coaching Points:
- Organize back line quickly.
- Retreat and recover quickly once possession is lost.
- Prevent any direct passes behind.
- 1st defender delays for defenders to get into positions.
- Force play into covering defenders.
- Block crosses and shots.

Organization:
3/4 of the pitch.
Instructions:
- 6v6
- Set up five gates (gated goals).
- One point for dribbling or rwb through the gates in the direction of forward play.
- Two points for scoring in the main goal.
- Nearest player to the ball closes down space to deny opponent from dribbling through the gates.
- Main objective is to retreat, recover and prevent opponents from scoring through the gates.
Coaching Points:
- Pressure and cover.
- 1st defender (pressuring player) should be supported by 2nd defender (covering player).
- Recovery runs.
- Body shape.
- Force play in one direction.
- Patience.
- Transition quickly from attacking to defending.
Progressions:
- Touch restrictions i.e. maximum of 3 touches.
- Make gates bigger.
- Remove gates and progress to free play.
Regressions:
- Make size of the pitch smaller.
- Make gates smaller.

Organization:
- Set up two 15 x 15 area as shown.
- 6 players (4 Attackers & 2 Defenders).
- 1 Ball (additional on outside).
Instructions:
1. Attackers set up around outside of the area - 1 Attacker per side
2. Two Defenders working inside the middle of area
3. Attackers aim to keep possession (2-touch) & can move up & down their line to support each other
4. Defenders must try to work as a team to pressure and cover.
5. Force mistakes.
5. After set time players rotate.
Coaching Points:
• Angle of approach.
• Communication - coach each other.
• Interchanging of positions - Pressure (1st Defender) & Cover/Support 2nd Defender.
• Body Shape - try to dictate them to play one way.
Progressions:
P - If Attackers make 5 passes they score a point. Defenders score points if they force mistake.
P - Add target ball in middle of area (see pic) Defender must block shots/passes but are not allowed inside the diamond... If attackers knocks the ball off the cone, they score two points. Attackers still score one point for every 6 passes).
P - Defender that forces the mistake or wins ball swtiches out with Attacker.
