Warm Up (10 mins)

Warm Up Phase

Players are in groups of 2 or groups of 4 (depending on the space and amount of players you have).

The player at the front of each line dribbles out at pace, directly at the two cones in front of them and performs an attacking move/piece of skill to get beyond the cones (which act as a defender) and play a pass to the player in the next line on the opposite side of the grid. That player then repeat this process going the other way.

Ask players to perform different moves at pace.

- inside and outside cut

- scissors

- Ronaldo chop

- V-Turn

- Players choice (allow creative freedom)

Coaching Points

  • Attack at speed, keeping the ball close to you.
  • Timing of the skill to beat the opponent (don't get too close into tackling range).
  • Quality of the pass into the next player.
  • Quality of first touch to set up the next dribble.
  • Be confident on the ball.
Progressions
  • Make it a race first team to complete a certain amount of rotations/reps wins.

1v1 (20 mins)

Constant 1v1

Players play 1v1 within the central space. The attackers objective is to beat the player in the 1v1 and get the ball into his team mate on the opposite side of the grid. If they are successful the defender must stay in the middle and play against the next player. If the defender wins the ball he passes it into one of his team mates on the outside of the grid and they now come in to play 1v1 against the new defender who is the player that lost the ball in the previous 1v1.

Defenders must be above the central cone when challenging for the ball.

Make it a team competition - First team to score 6-8 points wins

Coaching Points

  • Be positive and direct, attack the defender at pace.
  • Look to unbalance the defender with a piece of skill and/or change of speed and direction.
  • Attack the defender foot front.
  • Can you find a yard of space to complete a pass to a team mate when needed.

1v1 / 2v2 to Goals (20 mins)

1v1 / 2v2's

Split your group into two teams, one team is attacking and the other is defending.

On the coaches command players run around their corner cone and the nearest goal to enter the field to play in a 1v1 or 2v2 situation.

The attackers must beat the defender off the dribble or get behind them with passing before finishing in either goal.

If the defender or defenders win the ball they look to counter attack to the two goals at the opposite end of the field.

Rotate teams after 2-3mins and keep score.

Coaching Points

  • Be positive / direct with the ball at your feet, put the defender under pressure.
  • Head up early and assess your decision
  • How can you unbalance the defender?
  • Movement of 2nd player to create space or passing option.
  • Speed of attack must be high.
  • How/can we create an overload within the 2v2?
Progressions
  • Set a time limit for the attackers score a goal.

Conditioned Game

3v3 game.

The objective of the game is to score in one of your oppositions 3 goals.

Players can pass to one another but CANNOT leave their area of the field.

This encourages them to be positive in 1v1 situations and also look for combinations to score goals.

Players must beat the defender of be behind them to score.

Coaching Points

  • Decision making on the ball pass, dribble of shoot?
  • Speed of play
  • Bravery on the ball
  • Be comfortable on the ball under pressure
  • Movement after a pass into a new area
  • Keep the ball close to you when engaging the defender
Progressions
  • Remove the wide goals and play with only the central goals.
  • Player can now move into the zone next to them with the ball.
  • Remove lines and add GK's (Normal game but focus on the theme of the session).
