Players will experience and develop the ability to defend 1v1 situations. The players will;  

  • Be able to defend with the correct body shape / mirroring 
  • Recognise whether to be patient or to engage 
  • Develop radar work in 1v1 defending

Warm Up (5 mins)

ORGANISATION 

  •  In a 3x2 grid, 
  • One ball on each of the box.

HOW TO PLAY

  • Start of with a dynamic warm up and on my whistle, players sprint on of the balls.
  • Each ball must have 2 players on it.
  • The two players plays a knee tapping game.
  • The aim of the game is to develop correct body shape and mirroring.
  • A player gets 2pts if they tap the other players knee.
  • Work for 2 minutes(20sec 10 rest)

PROGRESSION 

  • NA

COACH OBSERVATION
  • Are players brave, keeping the right defending distance?
  • Are players switching feet, getting in defensive shape?

Attacker v Defenders (5 mins)

ORGANISATION 

  •  In a 3x2 grid, the attacking team set up on the outside with a ball and each the defending team player locked inside a box. 

HOW TO PLAY

  • Attacking player are placed outside the box and aims to travel in as many boxes as possible, attacker cannot go back to a box he has just visited.
  • The defending team are locked in a box each and tries to tag as many players that come into their grid.
  • When the defender wins the ball they pass it into one of the goal and attacker goes and pick it to start again.
  • Score is boxes visited minus players tagged.
  • Switch functions

PROGRESSION 

  • The attacking team cannot go back to the box he has just left. what does that mean for you as a defender? 

COACH OBSERVATION

  • Are players picking the right moments to engage? e.g when there is high traffic or close to the sideline, heavy touch?
  • Are players recognising switch side their teammates are forcing the opposition to play?

1v1 Defending Stadium game (5 mins)

ORGANISATION 

  •  In a 3x2 grid, have a 1v1 in the in the 2 channels.
  • Each channel is a stadium with two goals at either end.
  • Red and Blue stadiums, 4v2 in each stadium 

HOW TO PLAY

  • Game starts with the attacking player coming in to receive the ball and turning to attack the defender in the middle.
  • If the defender wins the ball, they try to score in any of the mini goals. Only the live attacker can challenge the defender.
  • The defender switch every time a new striker is in.
  • The striker can only pass the ball to the opposite side after they go pass the second line.
  • Score is defender wins 2 point if they win the ball and another 2 if they score in the mini goal.
  • Attacking team gets 1 point every time the ball is transferred successfully.
  • Switch functions every minute and 10 second for them to coach each other and remind of the coaching point.

PROGRESSION 

  • Normal game

COACH OBSERVATION

  • Are players picking the right moments to engage? e.g closing high up the line to keep them far away from the goal.
  • Are the defender scanning around and adjusting feet ???? based off the player on the opposite side?
  • Are the players recovering after getting beat?
