Skills Gauntlet (15 mins)

Title: Skills Gauntlet

Purpose:

Getting efficient and effective touches on the ball in a variety of ways.

 

Organization & Objective:

 

Create channels 5 yards in width and 12-15 yards in length. 2 players in between each channel with 1 ball between them. The first player in each group will use the dribbling technique demonstrated by coach down and back before laying the ball of to their teammate. Coach will vary the dribbling technique every 60-75 seconds. Players should roughly get 400-500 touches on the soccer ball in a 8-10 minute span.

 

 

 

 

 

Progressions:

 

 

  • Inside foundations. 

  • Toe tap pushes.

  • Lateral sole roles

  • Inside-outside touches (R foot only & L foot only)

  • Inside-outside touches combining using both feet.

  • Speed dribble with laces.

  • Vary turns - Inside chop, Outside cut, Pullback.

 

 

Coaching Points:

 

 

  • Keep the ball close and controlled. Control > Speed
  • When control is good, increase your speed.
  • Pick your head up after turning. Assess the space.
  • Inside of the foot when passing.

Triangle Partner FitSkill (10 mins)

Title: Triangle 2 Player Passing Activation

 

 

Purpose:

 

 

  • Activating short passing combinations with a partner. Check around the top cone before showing to the opposite side.

 

 

Organization & Objective:

 

 

Cones placed in a 3x3x3 triangle. 2 players per group with 1 ball. The player on the base of the triangle will start with the ball. The player standing off the cone will demand the ball, receive, and pass back. After doing so, they will check away around the top cone, and then check back in on the opposite side cone where they will demand the ball again. Players will uphold their roles for 1 minute before switching. 

 

 

Progressions:

 

 

  • Player working within the triangle will turn and dribble around the top cone to the other side where they’ll then play their pass. They’ll call again from that side and repeat the action.

  • Base player will toss the ball in the air. Player within the triangle is to settle to ground before play the pass back.

  • Base player will toss the ball in the air. Player within the triangle will work on different volleys. (Inside, Laces, Chest volley, Headers).

 

 

Coaching Points:

 

 

  • Proper weight and accuracy to your passes.

  • Focus on a quality first touch to set yourself up for a good pass.

  • Players should be on their toes ready to receive and demanding the ball.

2 Line Unopposed Finishing (10 mins)

Title: 2 Lines Unopposed Finishing

Purpose:

Attack the goal on the dribble to create a goal scoring opportunity via a shot. 

 

 

Organization & Objective:

Coach is aligned with the goal, 15-30 yards. Become further away as players get older. Create two lines at angles and split players evenly.  All the soccer balls with coach. Coach begins by playing a pass to the first player in one line. That player attacks the cone in front of them, dribbles by it to get within shooting range, and has a shot. The player retrieves their ball, passes it back to coach, and returns to a line. Players are encouraged to switch lines. Coach continues to switch playing passes to each of the two lines. 

 

 

 

 

Progressions:

 

 

  • Have the lines stay as teams and have a competition. Most goals after X reps (15, 20, 25).

  • Reward 1 point for a shot on goal and 3 points for a goal. 

 

 

Coaching Points:

 

 

  • Call for the ball from coach.
  • Attack the cone by dribbling at speed.
  • Set yourself up with controlled touches when in shooting range. 
  • Make solid contact with the ball with your laces or instep.
  • Keep your head down when striking the ball.

Gate Possession (Passing) (20 mins)

Title: PASS through gates - Possession

 

Purpose: 

Possess with your team with an objective of completing a pass through an open gate.

 

Organization & Objective: 

In a 30x30 grid have two teams of 4-5 players. Set up (5) 1.5 yard gates as outline in the image. Each team's objective is to possess the ball to create opportunities to penetrate a gate with a pass. Every gate they pass through is a point. Play for 5 minutes. Team must target a new gate after successfully passing through one. They cannot earn points by playing through the same gate consecutively. 

 

Progressions 

  • 1-2 Combinations to earn a point.

Coaching Points:

  • Dribble when open space is available. Otherwise look to move the ball by passing.

  • If a channel is defended, turn and look to attack elsewhere where there is less pressure.

  • Move the ball with urgency to maximize creating attacking opportunities.

Switching play - 3v3 + Targets (20 mins)

Title: Liverpool 2 Direction Possession.

 

Purpose: 

 Moving the ball away from pressure while changing the point of attack

 

Organization & Objective: 

 8-12 players. 25x25 yard grid. There will be 4 players on the outside. Two players from each team on opposite sides. Connect passes with inside players while trying to change the point of attack from east to west or north to south. Team with the ball should be trying to find central players to switch the point of attack. A team is rewarded a point if they hit both of their target wall players without being dispossessed. Rotate outside players in every 3 minutes.

 

Progressions: 

  • Two touch max for outside players.
  • All inside players are to touch the ball between wall players if they are to be rewarded a point. 
  • Inside players follow your pass and replace the outside player. Outside players first touch must be positive into space and away from defenders.

Coaching Points: 

  • Quick off ball movement. Move to open space and adjust your angle to be in a supportive position.
  • Play with urgency. Stay relaxed but play quick.
  • Play backwards to your wall if there is pressure on you.
