SSG - 3v3 (20 mins)

The focus of this session will be playing with intensity. When you lose the ball, can you win it back quickly? Can you beat your opponent to the ball?

Arrival Activity - 3v3 - Let the boys play and ref their own games. Intervene if necessary, leave balls next to the nets and sides to encourage quick play.

3 vs 3 in the 18

Set Up

3 teams of 3 (if you have any extras use as extra feeders) in the 18 yard box

Play

1 team attacking the goal, the other defending

When defensive team wins the ball, send to the feeders around the box and then attackers become d and vice versa

Feeders can shoot for the attacking team with 1 touch, only have 2 touch to play passes otherwise

Play for 5 minutes and rotate teams

Details

movement offensively (run or post up?)

overload or not, when is it good or bad to

defensively (match up or zone?)

feeders on the ground or in that air, when and why?

3v2 Continuous (SSG) (20 mins)

Set up

3 teams, 2 defenders on front of each net and 3 players in the middle. Keepers in the nets or if you don't have enough keepers, use pugs or a small goal made with cones.

Details

3 blue attack 2 red. When the ball crosses half, the red on the side sprints to the middle of the field at the half line, touches the ground and then joins the defense as a recovery defender.

If blue score, they get a point, if not (either red win the ball, shot misses target or shot is saved) the 3 red attack the 2 black and the same happens going the other way. 2 of the 3 blue stay on defence and 1 goes to the sideline to become the new recovery defender.

If you have more than 3 teams of 3, simply have the extra players in a cue in the sideline. You can go with as many as you need but this does work best with no more than teams of 5.

Endzone Game (SSG) (20 mins)

Set-Up:

Set up the field as diagramed above. Two end zones.

*20x40 playing area*

Instructions:

  • To score you must pass the the ball to a teammate in the opposing team's endzone and they must stop the ball in the zone.
  • A player cannot wait in the endzone for a teammate to pass them the ball, they must time their run to receive the pass in the endzone (through ball - passing into space).
  • Defender cannot go in the endzone.
  • If a team scores ball starts from half. If a ball goes out, the players can grab the nearest ball on the outside to do a kick in (no dribbling).

Coaching Points:

  • How to time a pass to a teammate in space (the weight of the pass, distance, space, etc.
  • Scan, find the space where you can pass to a teammate.
  • Differentiate passing square to a teammate and passing to a teammate into space.

SSG - Crossing Game (20 mins)

Organization:

  • Make 2 18 yard boxes as the playing area with 2 goals and 2 teams.
  • Outside the 18 yard sideline is the space for the edge players to play. They cannot move into the opponents outside area nor can they enter into the field of play. Players in the middle can't go into the winger's area.

Instructions:

  • The goal is simple, the ball must be played wide before a goal can be scored.
  • Players on the outside have 2 touches, players on the inside have as many as they like. Feel free to change up the rules depending on the need for the group.

Technical/Tactical:

  • Quality and types of crosses.
  • Try not to use 2 touches on the outside, have your head up on the reception and see if you can one time it in or need the 2nd touch.
  • The ball does not have to be crossed, sometimes it's better to find a set pass instead or simply to bring the ball back to keep possession.
  • Decide the weight and position of the pass, a cross does not have to be high or back post to be effective.
  • Players in the field of play must time their runs according to the cross, don't be in the box waiting for the cross and then have no momentum to make a solid attack at net.

Psychological:

  • Attacking mentality, aggressive for balls in the air.

Physical:

  • Power for cross
  • Change of speed for runs
  • Jumping

Social/Emotional:

  • Communication, awareness of other players movements.

SSG - 3 Zone Game (20 mins)

Set up

  • Grid is 15x15 boxes on the sides, 5/10 x 15 in the middle (size dependant on age and skill of players and how many players in the boxes).
  • Team divided into 3 teams. 2 on the sides and one in the middle.

Organization

  • Coach plays ball to one of the teams on the sides.
  • Team in the middle sends defenders into the side grid (1 at first, build to 2 if ability allows).
  • Offensive team makes a set number of passes (3-5) and then the goal is to send the ball to the opposite side.
  • The pass to the opposite side can be through on the ground (remaining defensive players are permitted to intercept this pass) or over the middle group.
  • If they succeed then they score 1 point and stay where they are, defensive team then goes to challenge the ball on opposite side. If the defensive team wins the ball, they take the place of the attacking team and play continues as it started.

Details

  • Shape of the attacking team (fill the box and be at good supporting positions)
  • Communication on offense
  • Proper body shape to receive the pass
  • If 2 defenders closing, look to split
  • Don't have to pass to opposite side after requisite number of passes, ensure the right opportunity
