Coaching Points

  • Speed, Breakdown, Jockey, Press
On the Ball:
  • Defending player closest to the ball is first to press
  • Break down close to ball carrier, Delay - Deny quick pass forward
  • Body positioning either forcing ball carrier back into your teammates defending or toward touch line
  • Don't chase the ball when attacking player passes - maintain position and support
Off the Ball:
  • Support - Cover teammates
  • Depth - Deny opponents space, time & passing opportunities (close passing lanes)
  • Communication/teamwork
  • Maintain defensive shape & unity

Warm up (15 mins)

Organization & Set up

  • 8 cones - 4 per each player line (may increase lines dependent on players)
  • Players race against runs quickly toward the top cone and comes as close as possible to a full stop 
  • Coach call a direction as players approach cone and jockey toward the lower cone
  • Dynamic stretching to be done as they return to the end of the line.
  • Coaching Points:
    • Player shoud run as fast as possible to the cone
    • as they approach they should get low and slow down
    • When they approach the cone they should come to a full stop a, in the Jockey position 
    • Defender should close down 1 arm length away, with one foot in front of the other, on balls of their feet (one knee should be facing the cone "attacker").with body shaped to the opposite direction coach calls
    • Remember 4 Steps: Fast, low, slowdown, Jockey
    Progression:
    • Have players race each other, with the fastest being able to come to a complete stop at the top cone in the proper position and distance.

    Defending 1 v 1 (20 mins)

    Equipment & Setup:

    • 10 x 15 yrd Area
    • 5  Cones
      • 1 cone for Defenders 2 yrs from goal,
      • 1 cone 5 yrds from bottom touch line on oustid for Defenders
      • 2 cones for a Gate 2 yrds on outside boundary toward defenders
    • 1 Goal to  2 yrs from Top of Area
    • 8 Players
    Organization:
    • GK passes the ball to that attaching player.
      • Depending on Skill Level
    • Attaching player attempts to score on goal
    • Defending player tries to either drive player out of bounds or if they win the ball, run or pass through the gate.
    • Players switch sides - Defender becomes attacker, Attacker Defender
    • Attacker retrieves ball
    • Progression (P2):
      •  Have Defenders start 10 yrds in from Touch line, farthest from Goal to force defenders to position body between attached and danger area.

    Coaching Points:

    • Run quickly toward close down attacker with body positioning between the attacker and danger area
      • Do not wait attacker, close them down.
    • Defender should slow down and get low when approaching attacker and Jockey attacker.
      •  Defender should close down 1 arm length away, with one foot in front of the other, on balls of their feet (one knee should be facing the attacker).

    Defending 2 v 2 (20 mins)

    Organization and Setup:

    • 1 Goal

    • 4 large cones
    • 8 small cones
    • 15 x 20 yrd area
    • 2 v 2
    Organization:
    • GK passes ball to attackers (change player to pass to)

    • Attackers try to score on goal
    • Defenders press attackers an either drive attacker to sideline or win ball and run/pass ball through large cones on opposite side
    • If Goal Keeper saves ball, throw ball to either gate

    Coaching Points

    • Defending player closest to the ball is first to press
      • Run quickly toward and close down attacker with body positioning between the attacker and danger area
      • Do not wait attacker, close them down.
    • Body positioning -  either forcing ball carrier back into your teammates defending or toward touch line
    • Don't chase the ball when attacking player passes - maintain position and support
    • Support - Cover teammates
    • Depth - Deny opponents space, time & passing opportunities (close passing lanes)
    • Do not Chase attacking player with the ball.  Maintain support coving the passing lane
    • If ball is passed between attacking players, closet to the ball presses.  Ensure players do not chase the ball and to cover and support
