Defending headers with Central defenders (Progression 1 and 2)

Player 1 is the server. The server plays the ball in the air to player 2 who is working against A and B from the other team as central defenders. Once the defenders are getting good success with the one striker, introduce the 2nd striker into the play.

Defenders A and B are working on their positioning to defend the ball coming in. Defenders should be looking to head the ball high and to the sides of the pitch

We now add in serves from the wings as well. Player 4 and 5 will take turns crossing from the left and players 6 and 7 will take turns crossing from the right. Player 1 will still mix in the deliveries as well.

Player 4 will pass the ball deep for player 5 to signal the movement of player 2 and 3. Same will happen on the other wing as they take turns sending balls in.

Defenders A and B are working on their positioning to defend the ball coming in. Defenders should be looking to head the ball high and to the sides of the pitch.

Screen 5 (15 mins)

Defending headers with Central defenders Progression 4

Move to a game with 6 defenders (a keeper, a flat 4 and a cm) vs 7 attackers (2 strikers, 2 wingers and 3 cm's)

Goal of the game is to have the white send the ball into the strikers in the air. Either work the ball to send one centrally or get the ball wide for crosses.

If the defense gets the ball they try to score in the mini goal at half.

Defenders working on

1) Compactness

2) Balance and shifting from side to side

Very important to have communication with the back 4 and keeper
