Low diving (15 mins)

goalkeeper starts on their knees in a 4 yard goal. Server rolls ball to either side of goalkeeper for them to dive towards the ball.

Reiforce key points:

Body weight going forwards

hands out towards the ball in "handcuffs"

Drop head in behind hands early (to speed up the dive)

Bottom hand to stop the ball, top hand secures (hands in W)

Dive should be forwards "attack the ball"

Low Diving Techniques (15 mins)

Introduction to 3 main diving techniques:

Fall

Step Dive

Collapse:

"sweep" closest leg to the ball away

drive hands down towards ball

drop head quickly

push head and hands forwards to attack the ball

watch ball all the way from strikers foot into your body

Fall:

from SET position

transfer weight to closest foot

knee goes over toe to drive weight to the front of the foot to "attack" the ball

drive hands towards ball in "W"

drop head in behind hands early to speed up dive

watch ball all the way

Step Dive:

Step closest foot to the ball on a forwards diagonal

toe pointing towards the line of the ball

knee over the toe to push weight onto the front of the foot to "attack" the ball

as GK is stepping, push hands towards the ball and in front of the body towards the ball

drop head behind hands quickly

watch ball all the way

General:

Landing on side of knee > side of hip > arm pit area

arms and elbows out in front of body, stretching bottom hand towards ball

Introduction to Parrying Gates:

Parry > using heel of the hand and pace on the ball to guide the ball far and wide

Deflection > Finger tips to guide ball away from goal - around post

Low Diving Saves (15 mins)

Developing goalkeepers decision making

Goalkeeper moves to cone and back into line and up the line with server

Server strikes ball side foot (reasonable pace) either side of the goalkeeper for them to make a save

Assess decision making of goalkeeper

> are they seeing the ball first?

> correct use of dive?

> watching the ball all the way?

> attacking ball with body and hands?

> Parrying/Deflecting at correct times?
